1,775 civil parties, 330 lawyers, 20 defendants ... The “extraordinary” trial of the November 13 attacks will begin on September 8 at the Paris courthouse.


The trial of the attacks of November 13, 2015, which left 130 dead and more than 430 injured, opens Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. before the special court of assizes in Paris.

Six years after the deadliest terrorist attack in France, the twenty defendants will appear at the courthouse, Île de la Cité.

A trial that turns out to be extraordinary, recorded as the largest criminal hearing ever organized in France.

One room, 750 m2, 550 seats

Who says exceptional trial, says exceptional measures.

In order to meet the different needs of the hearing, work was launched in January 2020 in the courthouse in Paris.

According to the newspaper

La Croix

, the room measures 750 square meters, 45 meters long and 15 meters wide.

It is able to accommodate 550 people, is equipped with a secure box that can accommodate 12 accused and 10 cameras intended to ensure its historical recording as well as its retransmission.

The large room, however, has a limited duration: it could disappear in 2023, after having hosted the trial of the Nice attacks.

10 TV transmission rooms

Given the crowds, 10 broadcast rooms are made available to the civil parties during the highlights of the trial.

Each of these rooms can accommodate a total of 2000 people: they are intended for civil parties, journalists and lawyers.

20 accused, including 14 present

Twenty people are referred to the Assize Court: fourteen defendants will be present, including Salah Abdeslam, the only surviving member of the commandos who killed 130 people and injured hundreds of others in Saint-Denis and Paris, eleven will appear and three are free under judicial supervision.

Six other defendants will be tried by default.

1765 civil parties

1765 people, of twenty nationalities, had become civil parties on the day of the order of indictment before the Assize Court in March 2020. This number is likely to change throughout the trial, until 'the requisitions of the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office (Pnat).

330 lawyers will be present at the trial

330 lawyers are in the file, including around 300 representing the civil parties.

Three attorneys general will be there to represent the accusation, brought by the national anti-terrorism prosecution: Camille Hennetier, Nicolas Le Bris and Nicolas Braconnay.

The room has provided 24 seats for defense lawyers on one side, and for 42 civil party lawyers.

The others will be able to attend the debate from the broadcasting rooms provided for this purpose.

Five magistrates

The Assize Court competent to judge acts of terrorism is exclusively composed of five professional judges.

It will be chaired by Jean-Louis Périès.

Two of the magistrates are also presiding officers: the first assereure Frédérique Aline and the honorary magistrate Xavière Simeoni.

Four additional magistrates will attend the debates and replace the members of the court in the event of default.

An instructional file of 542 volumes, one million pages

The investigation file has 542 volumes, or 53 linear meters (the equivalent of a third of the height of the Paris judicial court) and one million pages.

145 hearing days minimum

At least 145 hearing days are scheduled until May 25, 2022, according to a provisional schedule released in July.

The hearing will be held from Tuesday to Friday from 12:30 p.m., as well as certain Mondays in accordance with the schedule decreed by the presiding judge.

Throughout the trial, exceptional security measures will be deployed. Or for a period of eight months. According to Tourisme Judiciaire, “

pedestrians will not be able to access rue de Harlay or Quai des Orfèvres. Bicycles cannot circulate on Boulevard du Parlais. Buses and cars will be diverted. The Pont-Neuf and Cité metro stations remain open

”. The Pont-Neuf and Lutèce car parks will be closed for the duration of the trial for vehicles that do not have a subscription or authorization.
