The United States has imposed economic sanctions on four Iranian security services operatives following the abduction of a feminist journalist, human rights activist and opposition leader, Malkih Alingad, from her home in New York to Tehran.
A statement from US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the United States was "aware that there was an Iranian interest in abducting and harming other American citizens, including those who worked for the administration."
"The Iranian regime's kidnapping plot is another example of an attempt to silence the voices of those who oppose it, wherever they are. Hurting those who oppose it demonstrates the regime's willingness to intimidate and oppress beyond Iran's borders," said Andrea Gaki, head of the ministry's foreign property control department. The four agents identified by US intelligence are Alirza Shahwarogi, a senior Iranian-organized organization, as well as Mahmoud Hazin, Kia Sedgi and Omid Nuri. The sanctions mean the blockade of all property owned by the Iranians in the Bar-Tau countries under its control, as well as surveillance and other possible sanctions on anyone who did business with them.
The Iranian plot was exposed by American intelligence in June and published in the country's media. Al-Jing is a thorn in the flesh of the Iranian regime for a long time and manages to organize spontaneous protests of women against the regime through the internet. The project founded by "My Secret Freedom" helped recruit women in Iran itself against the law requiring the wearing of a veil in public and many women were arrested by the "Morality Police" in protest of the law.
