Netflix
premiered this Friday the fifth and final season of
La casa de papel
,
the Spanish series that has become a worldwide phenomenon since it landed on the platform, and which has become one of the main titles of its global offering .
A success with the audience that has turned its protagonists into world stars, who accumulate millions of followers on social networks, and which has made its production company, Vancouver Media, grow exponentially.
This, founded by the creator of the series,
Álex Pina
, and which also owns its majority shareholding, has increased its income by 424% since the series premiered in 2017, then on Antena 3. That year,
Vancouver Media,
in which Atresmedia itself also participates with 20%, it obtained a turnover of 8.8 million. In 2020 this amounted to 46.1 million, which in addition to multiplying the figure for 2017 by more than five, represented an increase of 26% compared to 2019, as reflected in the accounts that have just been deposited in the Mercantile Registry. His profit was 6.5 million, compared to 10 the previous year.
As it says in its management report, the reason for the increase in income is in the "rapid growth of the company, translated into a greater number of series production projects". After the success of
La casa de papel,
Vancouver Media has also been behind the
Red Sky
series
,
another title that is broadcast through Netflix, or
White Lines,
also on the same platform and which premiered last year. Before that, he produced
El embarcadero,
broadcast on Movistar +.
Netflix is the main client of Álex Pina's production company. In its annual accounts, it figures the revenue from the US company at 45.9 million, 99.6% of its turnover. Revenues from Spain were just 158,872 euros, the remaining 0.4%. As explained from Vancouver Media, the relationship with Netflix will continue to be fruitful in the coming years with "several projects" already underway, such as the start of filming the third season of
Sky Rojo
.
Its growth has also been accompanied by an increase in the employment generated. In 2020, the average number of people who worked for the production company was 211, by 137 in 2019 or fifty in 2017. Of course, the pandemic also impacted last year in Vancouver Media, which had to undertake an ERTE ( temporary employment regulation file) by suspending the filming schedule due to confinement. The affected workers had already returned to work as of the date the accounts were formulated, on March 31. In them, society reflects that it does not believe that the evolution of covid-19 will significantly affect its business this year.
