“He was the fittest and healthiest person I know. He was climbing mountains in Wales and camping in the woods four weeks before he died. " Without consolation, Jenny Mccann talks about her twin brother,
John Eyers
, who at age
42 died of coronavirus
in early August. “He thought that if he contracted Covid it would be a mild form.
He did not want to put a vaccine in his body
”. He repented, late, on his deathbed. At
34, Stephen Harmon
got tired of posting comments like “I have 99 problems, but the vaccine is not one of them” on his social networks, boasting of his refusal to receive it, since
“he trusted more in the Bible than in Anthony Fauci "
, the White House expert and adviser. A month later, what was uploaded to those same networks were the images of his daily battle against Covid.
After a month, he died. "I blame myself every day,"
Mindy Greene tells The New York Times in front of the intensive care unit at Utah Valley Hospital, while she waits to
see her husband, between life and death
at the hands of the coronavirus that was infected from her children . “
We don't get vaccinated
. I read all kinds of things about the vaccine and it scared me ... I had the feeling that we would be fine, "he wrote on Facebook about a reality that proved to be very different.
Stories like these, based on the same
fallacious arguments
, are heard daily. Voices such as those that arose days ago in
Córdoba
when
sixty judicial employees refused to be vaccinated
, take the PCR test and resume face-to-face work
are also heard daily, in public and in private,
arguing that the vaccine is "experimental" and the
swabs, "invasive"
and they can "damage health", threatening to reach the Supreme Court with their claim.
One of the voices representing them tried to explain that she was not "anti-vaccine", since for example the flu vaccine is applied.
"What happens is that I do not know what the Covid contains," he justified.
It's hard to imagine this person digging into the full flu formula before graciously offering his arm to receive the stick.
"The vaccine is not mandatory"
, is another of the justifications with which those who refuse to be immunized against Covid are stopped.
Of course, as soon as that possibility arises, the argument to oppose is the violation of the freedom to decide: "My body, my decision", is one of the slogans.
But
the freedom of one ends where that of the others begins.
French President
Emmanuel Macron
made it very clear
: "The freedom in which I owe nothing to anyone does not exist", since it is based "on the sense of reciprocal duty. If tomorrow you infect your father, your mother or me, I am a victim of that freedom of yours, while there is the possibility of something to protect you and me.
In the name of freedom they will perhaps suffer a serious form of Covid
and will arrive at this hospital. There are all these personnel who will have to attend to them and perhaps give up attending to another person. That is not freedom.
That is called irresponsibility
”.
Anti
-vaccine movements
are not new.
They were born more than 150 years ago in England
, when thousands of people took to the streets in protest against the obligation to get vaccinated against smallpox, which claimed 400,000 lives a year in Europe. It started when Edward Jenner, a physician, scientifically verified a belief in circulation: inoculating a mild dose of cowpox provided protection against smallpox. The attack came from various angles. One of the arguments was that obtaining material from cows was unhealthy or unchristian, since it was an inferior creature.
Another
impulse to the movement
was given in 1998 by
the English doctor Andrew Wakefield
, through a study that proved to be trucho. Published in the prestigious scientific journal The Lancet, the work sustained a link between the triple viral vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) and autism. It was later found that
the case had been rigged
and that Wakefield was also working on his own measles vaccine.
The Lancet publicly retracted
and the UK General Medical Council
removed Wakefield's license and expelled him
from its ranks.
According to the
WHO, vaccines save 2-3 million lives each year
. It has been proven that
mass and global vaccination is essential
to stop the spread of the coronavirus
. Despite this, the anti-vaccine preaching perseveres in its objective. As Karl Popper said, "true ignorance is not the absence of knowledge, but the fact of refusing to acquire it."
