SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz met French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday.
An informal discussion was planned just under three weeks before the general election.
One of the topics should be the international climate club proposed by Scholz in the spring, with which countries willing to protect the climate should be able to avoid location disadvantages.
Scholz came to the meeting a little late.
The Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet is to be received in the Elysée Palace this Wednesday.
A visit by the Green candidate Annalena Baerbock to Macron before the election was not planned.
Corona development fund and the planned global minimum tax
Other topics of Scholz's talks in Paris should be the EU's Corona reconstruction fund and the planned global minimum tax.
As finance minister, Scholz was involved in the negotiations on both projects.
Germany received the first part of the Corona aid from the new European reconstruction fund with 2.25 billion euros in August.
When it comes to the plan for a global minimum taxation, also for tech companies like Amazon or Google, it is currently the turn of the major industrial and trading countries.
Following an agreement by 131 states at the working level, approval by the heads of state of the G20 states in October is within reach.
Scholz had met Macron several times in his political career.
Among other things, during his time as Mayor of Hamburg he also held the office of the Federal Republic of Germany's representative for cultural affairs within the framework of the treaty on Franco-German cooperation.
Laschet currently holds this position.
