There couldn't have been a better way for Maria (83) and Paul Weigl (84) to get to know each other than a theater rehearsal.

That was a little over 60 years ago.

Now the couple celebrated a diamond wedding.

Jesenwang - The seed of love was planted in the Jesenwang community center. A theater rehearsal took place there. “My wife was there on stage, I was there because a few songs were included in the play,” says Paul Weigl, long-time local councilor and cultural advisor at Jesenwang. That evening the two started talking and then went home together. “Quite harmless,” as Maria Weigl emphasizes. Her husband Paul laughs and adds jokingly: "Of course I didn't attack her straight away." But at least, according to Maria Weigl: "There are just meetings where you can feel something."

It was such a thing that evening, because from it developed the great love that has been in a marriage for 60 years.

And it didn't take long until the marriage proposal was made.

“Two or three years?” Says Paul Weigl and looks at his wife.

She thinks about it briefly - and takes the golden mean: "It's been two and a half years." Sometimes she has to think twice, she says.

"But then the memories come back."

The couple has some memories to share.

Most of them have something to do with culture.

Paul Weigl, born in Moorenweis, came to Jesenwang because of a job advertisement.

We were looking for a teacher who could also function as a church musician at the same time.

Paul Weigl is still an enthusiastic choir director and organist - and teacher.

A job made for him.

And so the way was free to get to know and love his Maria in her new home village.

Maybe the wedding would have been even faster than two and a half years after they met.

“But I wanted to finish my teaching exam first.

And then we got married, ”says Paul Weigl.

Culture always played an important role for the Weigls, and not just because of his work as a choir director and organist. Among other things, he founded a choir project with the Ammersee-Amper-Sängerkreis or, together with his long-time friend Eduard Huber, brought two songbooks to the district's kindergartens.

Maria Weigl accompanied her husband in his cultural activities wherever possible.

Otherwise, she fulfilled the role of a housewife and mother.

The couple has two sons and a daughter.

And meanwhile also ten grandchildren.

So there was no shortage of work at home for Maria.

“My husband was out and about a lot,” she says.

And laughingly pushes afterwards: “But he kept coming back.” Paul Weigl has always been able to rely on his wife to take care of him.

His wife attended home economics school.

"That's why she can cook so well."

Today Paul Weigl still leads a 37-member choir and also plays the organ.

“I just enjoy doing it,” he says.

And Maria Weigl says: “He needs a bit of work.

Just newspaper and television, that's not enough. "

When asked about the recipe for their long marriage, Paul Weigl says: "There are always things that you don't agree on, but then you just have to talk about them." And come to an agreement.

Maria and Paul Weigl have been doing this for 60 years.

The real celebration won't take place until September 11th - Paul Weigl's 85th birthday.

“We always celebrate it together,” says Jesenwanger.
