Last season was memorable for several reasons.
The pandemic left the stadiums empty.
Just over a million lucky people attended any of the 256 NFL games in 2020, an average of 3,922 per game.
In the 2019 campaign, before the world knew and succumbed to the COVID-19 virus, five teams had more than a million fans during all their games.
Dallas led the league with 1,201,599, including 667,377 at home.
Not having an audience in the stadiums was a very important factor throughout the year.
The home advantage disappeared and the home team's record was 127-128-1.
The irony about this is that, in the last game of the 2020 season,
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the first team in history to win the Super Bowl in their own stadium.

The eternal Tom Brady (he turned 44 in August) and the Bucs leave as favorites to return to the Super Bowl.
If he succeeds, “TB12” will play in his eleventh Super Bowl, in which he would seek to lift Vince Lombardi for the eighth time in his incredible career.
In Week 4, by the way, Brady will face the New England Patriots for the first time, a team with which he spent his first 20 seasons in the NFL and with which he won six Super Bowls.
That Foxborough game, I anticipate, will set multiple ratings, if not the most-watched regular-season game ever.
For that game and for most games in 2021 we will have full stadiums again, in another campaign that promises to be unforgettable.
For the first time, the NFL will play an 18-week, 17-game regular-season schedule per team.
Week 18 will be played on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 January;
a week later we will have the
Wild Card
games
and thus we will start the road to Super Bowl LVI, scheduled for February 13, 2021 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
More than 90% of the league's players have at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine
, so few (maybe no) changes to the schedule are expected, something that was a constant last year with the teams that presented outbreaks of coronavirus.
We have not returned to the desired normality - and we have a long way to go -
but at least on Sundays we can enjoy the NFL as we used to.
The one that starts this Thursday has already been dubbed the "Greatest of All Time" season.

Ten stories to follow from the NFL 2021

The NFL is upon us with various stories that week after week will set the rhythm of the season until it reaches its denouement on February 13 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The months in which the drama occurred in the offices with discussions about hiring or commercial agreements made down to deliver the ball to real football.
As the league's narrative has taught us for most of its existence, there is little certainty about what will happen throughout a campaign that is based on edge decisions and big consequences.
That said, we present you the 10 stories to follow during the fall and winter,
among which you will not find Tom Brady, because the best
quarterback
of all time eats at a separate table.
1. Will the loss at the SBLVI make the Chiefs stronger?
If it is true that failures and broken hearts make people stronger, we will find out next winter with the season that Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs develop.
Although popular wisdom holds that Kansas City was beaten in Super Bowl LVI because of injuries and not because of the Buccaneers, the truth is that the Chiefs did not have a celebratory parade.
With the addition of men in line to protect Mahomes, Andy Reid hopes his offense will take off again.
The big question - once again in the Mahomes era - is how good his defense will be to repeat a trip to the big game for the third year in a row.
2. Rookie Quarterbacks with Immediate Impact
In the draft that was held in April of this year, five quarterbacks were selected in the first round.
For many, it's a matter of time before a team eager to refresh its offense puts a rookie on the field.
The Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence is the favorite to start in Week 1.
However, Zach Wilson and Justin Fields push for the first ball of the season from their teams as well.
It is no secret to anyone that when the results are not as desired.
The NFL becomes a Roman coliseum where a gladiator is required to be sacrificed to make way for new blood.
3. 17-game season
As a measure to obtain greater resources after the millionaire losses suffered by the teams due to the coronavirus pandemic
, the NFL approved to extend the season to 17 games.
Beyond economics, the health of the players will be what is talked about especially at the end of the campaign.
Football, being the most physical sport in the United States, becomes a chessboard when it comes to taking care of the pieces and, with one more match, the chances of losing elements due to injury increase considerably.
4. The novel Aaron Rodgers
No, Aaron Rodgers did not leave Green Bay.
No, the Packers didn't release Jordan Love either.
So it is likely that during the season there are a lot of insinuations that tense the atmosphere within Green Bay and everything turn it into a real fiasco.
Rodgers is a pro and will try not only to compete for another MVP season, but he may not have fully made his peace with the Green Bay office;
The prospect of continuing his career at Lambeau Field may not extend beyond this year.

5. Matthew Stafford goes to Hollywood
Hoping to become the second organization to play a Super Bowl at home,
the Rams traded Matthew Stafford, who was with the Detroit Lions.
Stafford is entering his thirteenth year in the NFL, but has repeatedly argued that he may be the missing link for the Rams to contest Vince Lombardi.
The Los Angeles team mortgaged part of their future in this bet that they seek dividends almost immediately.
6. Bill Belichick reinvents himself
For years Bill Belichick has been seen as a kind of monk, but also as a magician, always surprising with an ace up his sleeve.
However, last season the Patriots' performance was just as bad as the sweatshirts they wear during training.
Belichcik has yet to confirm that he will bet on Cam Newton as his solution again so the possibility of seeing a reinvention in the 'Wizard' tricks with rookie Matt Jones is great.
7. Will the Bills stop being the lovable losers?
With one of the best rosters in the AFC, the Bills are budgeted to repeat the postseason.
However, the conference final they reached last season makes anything but a trip to the Super Bowl a failure.
Josh Allen must repeat his great 2020 season and prove that it was not a fluke
.
The running game also has to improve significantly to help him.
The defense must also rebound from a low campaign in 2020 and look more like the shocking unit of 2019, which quelled passing games and forced turnovers more effectively.
The Bills have the pieces in place. We will see if fate awaits their fifth participation on a super Sunday.

8. The Mexican Isaac Alarcón
Despite the great tradition that exists in Mexico for the NFL, few players of this nationality have played official games.
Offensive lineman Isaac Alarcón is part of the
International Player Pathway program, which offers athletes a viable route to the NFL and an opportunity to develop their skills
.
This campaign, unlike previous years, will allow elements such as Alarcón, which were cut by the organizations, to remain in the practice teams with the possibility of being activated during the campaign.
In this way, Alarcón is heading to be another Latino by playing a regular season game.
9. Get ready to see player numbers like in college football
NFL owners approved a rule change governing the choice of numbers on players' jerseys.
The new guideline will allow running backs,
fullbacks
, tight ends and wide receivers to use any number between 1-49, as well as 80-89.
The
backline
defense will
also be eligible to carry from 1 to 49, while the
linebackers
can now use between 1-59 plus 90-99.
Things remain about the same for offensive linemen, who can pick 50-79, and defensive linemen, 50-79 and 90-99.
Quarterbacks and kickers also remain 1-19.
10. Football in the middle of the pandemic
Although it is the last point on this list, it is not the least important.
And the NFL is no stranger to the coronavirus pandemic, which could once again wreak havoc on games as it happened last year.
Although so far no player decided to exclude themselves for fear of contracting COVID-19, the outbreaks that could be generated among unvaccinated elements would bring losses of matches.
The league advised teams that no matches will be rescheduled due to a COVID-19 outbreak if the players involved are not vaccinated.
The canceled match will be a defeat for the team in which the infected elements are active, who will not receive a salary for that week.

La primera expansión de la temporada desde 1978 traerá consigo diversos beneficios económicos para los propietarios de la NFL, ¿pero a qué costo?
El juego extra añadido al calendario que no fue secundado con una segunda semana de descanso para los jugadores, les hace pensar a muchos de los involucrados que el riesgo de sufrir una lesión aumentará considerablemente. Sin embargo, el nuevo contrato de televisión de 105 mil millones de dólares por 10 campañas fue visto por el Sindicato de Jugadores como un enorme pastel del cual sacarán la rebanada que pague los cheques por poner en riesgo su salud.
Que las lesiones aumenten o no con un partido más cada año no es el único punto. La Semana 18 brindará la oportunidad para atestiguar un boom de récords rotos de temporada. A largo plazo, las hazañas que un jugador construyó en su carrera también serán arrancadas de los libros de marcas.
La misma conversación que ahora tenemos ocurrió en 1978, cuando la NFL creció de 14 a 16 partidos. El cambio rápidamente enterró los números que por años permanecieron. Con un calendario 14% más largo, Dan Marino despedazó en 1984 todos los récords existentes al establecer con los Miami Dolphins una campaña de 5,084 yardas y 48 touchdowns; para el mismo equipo, en 1977, Bob Griese lideró la liga con 22 pases de anotación.

The NFL has its own Benjamin Button and his name is Tom Brady.
En su vigesimoprimera campaña en la NFL, y primera con los Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady superó las 4,600 yardas aéreas por primera vez desde 2015 y terminó con al menos 40 pases de touchdown por primera ocasión desde 2007, cuando fue líder de la liga con 50.
¡Y lo hizo a los 43 años de edad!
Para hacer todavía más inverosímil la historia, Brady llevó a los Bucs al Super Bowl y ganó su séptimo anillo de campeón en febrero. Los otros seis los obtuvo con los New England Patriots, con los que jugó en nueve Super Bowls.
¿Cuál es su anillo favorito? “El siguiente”, responde Brady en automático.
Brady vs. el Tiempo
Son contados los atletas, no solo de la NFL sino de cualquier liga o deporte profesional, que cuidan su cuerpo como lo hace Brady, quien, de hecho, publicó hace cuatro años un libro en el que revela algunos de sus secretos. El “TB12 Method” es un régimen muy estricto que excluye alimentos como lácteos, gluten, azúcar, café y alcohol. E incluye algunas recetas exóticas como el helado de aguacate. Apetitoso o no, a Brady le da resultados y su hambre es de más títulos de la NFL.
“Es muy divertido para mí. Me encanta entrenar para ponerme en condiciones de competir. Amo el aspecto mental del deporte. Me divierto mucho haciéndolo. [Aporta] mucha alegría a mi vida”, dijo Brady durante el training camp de los Buccaneers. “No creo que haya ningún aspecto de mí que piense que lo que hice el año pasado signifique algo. Tengo que hacerlo este año”.
Si lo hace este año, entonces Brady será el primer quarterback que gana dos Super Bowls consecutivos desde las temporadas 2003-2004, cuando lo hizo… Un momento… ¿Tom Brady? Sí, el mismo. También sería el primer pasador que gana múltiples Super Bowls con dos franquicias. Solo él y Peyton Manning han ganado al menos un título de la NFL con dos equipos.
El reto de repetir
Para lograrlo, en el campo tendrá que pasar para unas cuantas decenas de touchdowns, que ayuden a poner centenares de puntos en la pizarra, pero fuera del terreno de juego su misión será evitar que sus compañeros de equipo se conformen con lo hecho la campaña pasada, cuando Tampa Bay se convirtió en el primer equipo de la historia que gana el Super Bowl en su propio estadio.
“La suposición de que todo será exactamente como el año pasado, eso es en lo que no debes caer”, aseguró Brady. “La realidad es que todo es diferente. Los equipos te verán un poco diferente. Eres la clase de equipo que todo el mundo está viendo ahora, por lo que hay diferentes grados de expectativa. Hay más ruido externo, habrá más gente que querrá venir a los partidos”.
Nadie en la organización de los Bucs, ni siquiera el coach Bruce Arians, es tan importante como Brady en ese sentido.
“Creo que la realidad es que debes concentrarte en lo que realmente es importante. ¿Cómo mejorar? ¿Cómo se mejora de una semana a otra, de un día a otro? Mejora tu rutina, mejora tu comunicación con tus compañeros [y] con tus entrenadores. No permitas que tu mente caiga en esa posición para suponer que solo porque hiciste algo en febrero lo volverás a hacer el próximo febrero, porque esa no es la realidad del football, es demasiado competitivo”, asegura. “Incluso los juegos que ganamos el año pasado tuvieron márgenes muy estrechos. Una o dos jugadas marcan la diferencia en cada partido”.

De menos a más
Sin un training camp habitual ni pretemporada (porque el COVID-19 tenía otros planes), Brady necesitó tiempo para dominar la ofensiva vertical de Arians y hacer química con sus receptores, incluso cuando uno de ellos era el tight end Rob Gronkowski, quien por cierto salió del retiro para volver a jugar junto a su mejor amigo.
Después de las derrotas consecutivas en casa ante Rams y Chiefs a finales de noviembre, no eran pocos los que dudaron que Brady pudiese, ya no llevarlos al Super Bowl, sino jugar los Playoffs con los Bucs, que en ese momento tenían el nada impresionante récord de 7-5. Pero Tampa Bay cerró la temporada regular con cuatro triunfos y, en los últimos dos, sendas palizas a Lions y Falcons, Brady lanzó ocho pases de touchdown.
En cuatro juegos de Playoffs, tres de ellos como visitante, encontró las diagonales en otras 10 ocasiones, contra tres intercepciones, todas en el Juego por el Campeonato de la NFC en Green Bay.
En el Año 2, Brady cree que puede hacer más.
“Realmente fue nuestra primera oportunidad de jugar juntos el año pasado y tenemos muchas oportunidades de convertirnos en algo que podría ser muy diferente. Tenemos que mejorar las cosas que hicimos bien y, sin duda, debemos basarnos en muchas cosas que no hicimos muy bien”, comentó. “Todas esas cosas se pueden mejorar. Creo que es un compromiso con un proceso diario de intentar mejorar y tenemos un grupo de muchachos muy competitivo”.
El regreso a Foxborough
No hay un juego en todo el calendario 2021 de la NFL que llame más al morbo que el duelo entre Tampa Bay y New England.
Cuando los Buccaneers visiten a los Patriots en la Semana 4, o la noche del 3 de octubre, para ser precisos, Brady jugará su primer partido en Foxborough con un uniforme distinto al de New England, y marcará su inevitable reencuentro con el coach Bill Belichick.
Los reportes y el lenguaje no verbal de ambos en su última etapa juntos sugieren que hoy Brady y Belichick no son precisamente amigos. No hay mala sangre cuando uno tiene que hablar públicamente del otro, pero tampoco es su tema favorito y sus respuestas son políticamente correctas. Hasta ahí.
Mientras Brady levantaba el Vince Lombardi en Tampa, Belichick ya diseñaba el plan de ataque para este año luego de una horrible campaña 2020, en la que los Patriots terminaron 7-9 (su primer récord perdedor desde el 2000, cuando el coach llegó al equipo) y sin un lugar en los Playoffs.
A la inevitable pregunta de quién era más importante en los Patriots, si Brady o Belichick, el quarterback ganó el primer round e inclinó la balanza de su lado. Obviamente el coach no se quedaría de brazos cruzados y en el Draft reclutó en la primera ronda a Mac Jones, un fenómeno en Alabama que ya mostró de lo que es capaz en la pretemporada.
Es solo cuestión de tiempo para que Jones mande a la banca al veterano Cam Newton. ¿Te imaginas que el novato sea el titular en ese juego ante Brady? Qué señora historia.
Los Patriots, por cierto, es el único equipo al que Brady no ha derrotado.

Los récords
En 21 años en la NFL, no son pocos los récords que posee Brady, pero el cajón aún tiene espacio para unos cuantos más.
Necesita 1,155 yardas para superar a Drew Brees (80,358) y ocupar el primer lugar de la historia en cuanto a yardas aéreas. Por el momento, Brady es segundo con 79,204. Con 365 pases completos también deja atrás la marca de Brees (7,142).
Busca empatar a Peyton Manning como los únicos quarterbacks con al menos 4,000 yardas en 13 temporadas y los únicos con 25 pases de touchdown en 16 campañas. Y requiere de 40 envíos a las diagonales para igualar a Aaron Rodgers como los únicos pasadores con tres campañas de 40 touchdowns, lo cual también empataría una marca de Brees (2011-12), el único que lo ha conseguido en años consecutivos.
Aunque su objetivo no son estas marcas. Brady quiere más Super Bowls, más Lombardis en las vitrinas de los Bucs, más anillos y más argumentos (si es que se necesitan) para que nadie dude que él -y solo él-, es el Más Grande de Todos los Tiempos.
