District - In the Starnberg district, 33 percent of all newly concluded employment contracts were of limited duration. 926 of a total of 2,807 new hires had an expiry date in the second quarter of 2020. The food-gourmet-restaurants union (NGG) draws attention to this and refers to figures from the Institute of Economics and Social Sciences (WSI) of the Hans-Böckler-Foundation.

"Fixed-term jobs are particularly widespread in the food and hospitality industry, but also in the food industry - and can be a trap, especially for younger employees," says Tim Lünnemann, Managing Director of the NGG region in Munich. For example, if you only have a temporary job, it is difficult to get an apartment or a loan. Even family planning is made more difficult. The next federal government urgently needs to get the problem under control and contain time limits.

According to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), 56 percent of all new hires in the food and beverage industry nationwide were temporary. In the hospitality industry, the rate of 45 percent was also well above the cross-sector average of 38 percent. "In the course of the corona pandemic, time limits can become a major problem for those affected because many companies are letting their employment contracts expire," warns Lünnemann. It is overdue for politics to curb time limits without a so-called material reason. Substantive reasons include parental leave replacement or a probationary period.

The trade unionist appeals to employees from the NGG branches to find out about the parties' election programs in terms of labor market and social policy before the federal election and to vote on September 26th.

"The subject of fixed-term contracts shows how important the voice of the employees is," emphasizes Lünnemann.

For those who work in the food industry, in hotels and restaurants, bakeries or butchers in the Starnberg district, a lot is at stake in this choice.

"Because how many hours people have to work, what pension they get in the end or whether a mini-job becomes a permanent position - that is also decided in the federal election," says Lünnemann.
