Protests against IAA in Munich: activists block highways

The activists had pasted over the motorway signs on the A9.

Instead of place names, messages such as “Traffic collapse in 2000 meters” or “Smash car lobby & industry - NO IAA” could be read there.

The activists had already announced a protest in advance of the fair, which will be taking place in Munich with a new concept for the first time.

Among other things, the police are expecting road blockades, climbing and abseiling, sabotage, intrusion attempts and even arson in the coming days.

The abseiling action on Tuesday morning had not been announced.

Most of the protests on the motorways have now been stopped by the police.

“Emergency services are on site.

The people are now being removed, "said a police spokeswoman on Tuesday morning.

The fire brigade was also on duty at several locations.

“The streets are closed, of course the traffic is jammed.” At first she was unable to give any further details.

The police observed the situation from the air with helicopters.

VDA rejects criticism of the IAA and calls on activists to enter into dialogue

After massive protests against the IAA at the Frankfurt am Main exhibition center in previous years, the concept was changed and the exhibition relocated to Munich.

However, this hardly appeased the radical protesters.

“We are calling for car-free cities, well-developed and free public transport - especially in rural areas.

And the immediate halt to construction of all motorway projects, ”says a press release by the activists.

The Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) rejected the criticism.

"The IAA Mobility shows the way to climate-neutral mobility," said VDA President Hildegard Müller.

However, violence is not a solution to disagreements.

"Our offer for dialogue is up."

After IAA protests on the Autobahn: Minister of State sharply criticized the action

Bavaria's State Chancellor Florian Herrmann also reacted sharply to the protests.

Of course, demonstrations,

protests and expressions of opinion are always possible, but there is also a legal framework for them, said the

CSU politician on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting in Munich.

If other people are

endangered

by the actions

, this is not to be tolerated.
