In the hours before the demonstrations for and against the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, this Tuesday, supporters of Bolsonaro tried several times to break the police blockades established near the Supreme Court and the Congress of the nation overnight, according to police and video from the scene.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, in the capital Brasilia, Bolsonaro's supporters were caught on camera trying to break through police blockades, to which the police responded with pepper spray to detain them.

In a video circulating on pro-Bolsonaro websites, a protester says "We just broke in and tomorrow we will break into the Supreme Court," referring to the police blockades around the 'esplanade' or expansive open field leading to the Congress building.

Brasilia police issued a statement overnight in response to the incident saying "security was maintained in the area" and "normality was restored."

The claims of Bolsonaro's supporters

Some Bolsonaro supporters have been calling for the dismantling of the Supreme Court due to multiple investigations into Bolsonaro and his family.

While the largest protests are expected in Brazil's capital and commercial center, Sao Paulo, demonstrations for and against the president are also expected in Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere.

Bolsonaro himself will participate in rallies in Brasilia and Sao Paulo.
