The 18-year-old from Breitbrunn played there for the German volleyball team at the U19 World Cup.

Welsch saw little of the country due to the corona.

Breitbrunn / Tehran - Laurenz Welsch looks back on a "unique event". The 18-year-old volleyball player from Breitbrunn was with the German U19 national team at the World Cup in Iran. After ten intensive tournament days with seven games, the team landed in a good eighth place. "If we call up our performance, we can keep up with the world's best," sums up Welsch, who was used in all games on the diagonal.

He is very satisfied with his performance. He also received this feedback from the coaching duo Dan Illot / Dominic von Känel. Due to the corona, the tournament took place without spectators. "It's a shame because the Iranians are enthusiastic about volleyball," said Welsch. Unfortunately, because of the tightness of the tournament schedule and the Corona rules, he saw almost nothing of the country. "Before the first game we were very tense," reports Welsch. The team only knew about their opponent Cuba that they are very athletic from experience. But in the end the North Americans were beaten relatively clearly 3-0 (25:16, 25:10, 25:22).

In the second match, Argentina brought the Germans back down to earth, 1: 3 (23:25, 22:25, 25:19, 22:25) it was said in the end.

Welsch: “We weren't consistent enough in the attack.

Since the selection of the Dominican Republic did not come, Germany won the Green Table.

They dominated the last group game from the start.

They confidently swept Egypt off the plate with 3: 0 (25:19, 25:15, 25:17).

"That was certainly one of our best games," emphasizes Welsch.

Welsch praises the team's good team spirit

In the round of 16 there was a neighborhood duel against Belgium. In a preparatory game, the Belgians were very close to the front. This time the German selection turned the tables. Thanks to a great performance by Jannes Wiesner, she won 3: 2 (17:25, 28:26, 17:25, 29:27, 15: 9). In the fourth set, Germany was already one leg out of the way, but the team fought their way back. “We had a good fighting spirit,” said Welsch. In the quarter-finals, however, there was no chance in the 0: 3 (19:25, 23:25, 26:28) against Poland. Welsch: “They were always one step ahead of us.” Not just the Germans. During the entire tournament, the future world champion only made a single set. In the placement games, they lost two more (0: 3 against Argentina, 1: 3 against Brazil). In the end, this meant eighth place for the German team. The disappointment was limited with Welsch and his teammates. Rather, they are already looking to the coming major events. The U20 European Championship is scheduled for summer 2022 and the U21 World Championship in two years.

Now Welsch's focus is on his new team.

The Breitbrunner plays on loan for TSV Mühldorf in the 2nd Bundesliga South.

Similar to Iven Ferch two years ago, Welsch will mostly train in Herrsching and play in Mühldorf at the weekend.

If the rulers were in need, they could order Welsch to Ammersee thanks to the double play right.

The 18-year-old graduated from high school in the summer, now he wants to dedicate himself entirely to volleyball.

“My role model in this regard is Tim Peter,” he says.

The outside attacker of the WWK Volleys Herrsching also studies during his engagement at the university in Munich.
