Rent madness in university cities, climate change and a lack of opportunities, for example when starting a career: Many people under 30 struggle with existential problems and are confronted with an uncertain future. So there are actually quite a few things that politicians could and should do for them, but young people often feel abandoned by those in power. SPIEGEL start manager
Sophia Schirmer
and columnist
Sascha Lobo follow up on young politicians, this evening at 6 p.m. - in the live stream on SPIEGEL.de
:
What are
your parties planning after the general election? And are the promises worth anything? Why should people under 30 choose them?

Jan Schiffer, member of the federal spokesman for the Left Youth, Konstantin Achinger, state chairman of the Young Socialists in North Rhine-Westphalia, and Jens Teutrine, chairman of the Young Liberals, are answering these questions
.
On Monday,
Anna Peters, the federal spokeswoman for the Green Youth
and the
chairman of the Young Union, Tilman Kuban, was
with Schirmer and Lobo in the studio. And they didn't skimp on clear words. When it comes to climate protection, for example, the CDU "made mistakes without a doubt," said Kuban, and repeatedly committed to the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 percent compared to earlier times. Among other things, they want to use two percent of the country's area for renewable energies and promote industry on the way to climate neutrality. The aim is to rebuild the economy so that, for example, steel or cement can be produced with zero emissions, “so that we are pioneers for the world. Because in the end the Chinese and Americans have to copy us. "
Anna Peters countered: So far, climate protection has always "given no shit" to the other parties. "Renewable energies have been actively slowed down in recent years." Peters called for more specific measures: a coal phase-out before 2038, no new registration of combustion engines from 2030, more investments in local public transport. And she said: "In my opinion, the great crises of our time cannot be solved by still clinging to economic growth."
Peters and Kuban also discussed the problem that many young people cannot find affordable housing.
"We have to ensure that Deutsche Wohnen and Co. are no longer allowed to speculate with our living space, and are no longer allowed to jazz up our rents," said Peters.
One must socialize living space and stop rent increases.
"We have to adopt a rent cap at the federal level that enables the federal states to do exactly the same at the federal state level." Kuban, on the other hand, relied on the mantra of "build, build, build".
That must be easier and cheaper.
"Some processes have to be controlled from above"
There was consensus on education and digital policy during the pandemic: too little was done for young people. “That annoys me massively that we still don't have a uniform school cloud, that we don't have a sensible administration, but that every municipality does its own thing and that's why the money isn't called up. Some processes have to be managed sensibly from above, «says Kuban. Digitization has progressed far too slowly in recent years. Peters called for an unbureaucratic digital pact for schools. "The goal of my party is that every child who goes to school gets a digital device," she said.
When asked what role youth organizations ultimately play in politics, Kuban and Peters had very different answers for themselves.
Kuban wants to remain realistic, you have to set small goals.
He is concerned with "clever, not blatant solutions".
Peters, on the other hand, sees himself more in the role of making more extreme demands and also questioning her party.
"It goes together because youth organizations can make demands and also express things that some of the chancellor candidates would no longer sign."
