A survey by the Civey Institute examined this.

The candidates for chancellor in particular did poorly.

Berlin - German top politicians have had to prove quite a bit of crisis management in recent years.

The corona pandemic, the situation in Afghanistan and the flood disaster in July of this year kept Merkel, Spahn and Co. on their toes.

In view of the general election on September 26th, citizens were asked which politicians, in their opinion, make good crisis managers.

On behalf of the newspaper

Handelsblatt

, the opinion research institute Civey carried out a survey in which the crisis management of top German politicians was an issue.

The Chancellor candidates from the Union and Greens in particular did not do well - CSU boss Markus Söder, on the other hand, seems to be popular with the population with his crisis management.

Opinion poll: Söder is the better crisis manager

Söder's tight policy in the fight against the corona pandemic seems to have paid off: Accordingly, almost every second citizen (49 percent) sees Söder as a good crisis manager, as the

Handelsblatt reported

on Tuesday (September 7th). The CSU boss is still ahead of the three candidates for chancellor. SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz is in second place with 41 percent approval. This puts the SPD politician well ahead of his competitors Armin Laschet and Annalena Baerbock: only 18 percent of those surveyed consider the two candidates for chancellor to be good crisis managers.

In the past few weeks, Armin Laschet has repeatedly polarized with statements or appearances.

After the flood disaster in July, videos of him circulated on social media where he laughed at a speech given by President Steinmeier in the crisis area.

In August, he was also criticized for his statement that 2015 should not be allowed to happen again after a large number of refugees from Afghanistan were expected after the Taliban came to power.

Left behind by Lindner, Spahn and Habeck: Baerbock and Laschet do poorly in crisis management

Green candidate Annalena Baerbock has also been noticed negatively in the past few months with allegations of plagiarism, inaccuracies in the curriculum vitae and additional income.

This could be one reason why her co-chairman Robert Habeck is more popular than the party's candidate for chancellor in the crisis management survey with 33 percent approval.

But other top politicians also do better than Laschet and Baerbock.

FDP chairman Christian Lindner comes in fourth with 25 percent.

Even CDU Health Minister Jens Spahn, who has been criticized for his management in the Corona crisis in recent months, is still ahead of Laschet and Baerbock with 23 percent.

In the survey, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas scored worst with 11 percent and left-wing chairman Janine Wissler with eight percent.
