The Supreme Court of Mexico has taken a historic step in the decriminalization of abortion in the country.
With 10 of 11 votes, the ministers have voted in favor of declaring unconstitutional the articles of the Penal Code of Coahuila that criminalize the voluntary interruption of pregnancy.
The decision sets a precedent for the rest of the states because it outlines the line that the rest of the country could follow towards decriminalization.
The ministers have spoken in favor of the decriminalization of abortion in two unconstitutional actions that reached the High Court from the states of Coahuila and Sinaloa.
The court on Monday started the debate on abortion and the criminal codes that punish abortion.
The magistrates began to discuss three actions of unconstitutionality regarding abortion in the laws of Coahuila and Sinaloa, and about the right to conscientious objection of health personnel.
