Essentially, (feminism is) essentially saying that men and women are equal, in the sense of participation in social life, in all of life.

And in that sense, I can say yes today, so I'm a feminist,

”said Angela Merkel during a discussion with Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

"

For me, the word feminism is indeed linked to a certain movement that fought very hard to put (equity) on the social agenda,

" she explained.

"We should all be feminists"

While she must leave power after 16 years in the chancellery at the end of the legislative elections of September 26, this is the first time that she has spoken so openly on this question that she always had until now managed to bypass.

Angela Merkel was interviewed by German journalist Miriam Meckel who had asked her the same question a few years earlier without her giving such a clear answer.

At the time, I was a little shy on the stage (where the interview took place), but today it's better reflected. And so, in that sense, I can say that yes, we should all be feminists,

”she said. “

I have to say that something has changed in our country, at least in Germany. I wouldn't have noticed it 20 years ago if only men had participated in a panel discussion. Today, I no longer think that is acceptable. Something would be missing

, ”she said, welcoming societal developments.

Aged 67, Angela Merkel will not stand for a fifth term but her conservative camp is weakened by the general elections at the end of September for which her party's candidate, Armin Laschet, is in great difficulty in the polls.
