7.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Acapulco and leaves at least one dead

The president of Mexico reported that no significant damage was reported in the country. "We heard loud noises in the building, windows, things that fell into the house, the power went out," said a resident of Acapulco, where it was the epicenter.


An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 degrees on the Richter scale with an epicenter in the tourist city of Acapulco, Guerrero, shook central and southern Mexico on Tuesday night and left at least one dead, according to the National Seismological Service.

"We heard loud noises in the building, noise from the windows, things that fell into the house, the power went out," said Sergio Flores, a resident of Acapulco contacted by phone by the news agency

"We heard water leaks, the water came out of the pool and people were heard shouting, very nervous people," he added.

In Mexico City, where the seismic alarm was activated seconds before the quake, authorities have reported no significant damage, although parts of the city lost power.

Residents across the city took to the streets as a precaution in light rain Tuesday night, carrying babies, children and pets.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that

at least three helicopters were flying over city halls

in search of structural damage, without any reported so far.

The United States Geological Survey had issued

a tsunami warning for the Mexican Pacific coast

after the earthquake.

But the Mexican authorities later reported that the threat had dissipated and that there would only be waves of less than one meter in height, so they called for extreme precautions on the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero.

Guerrero authorities reported that the movement was strongest in the Costa Grande, Costa Chica, the center and north of the state, as well as in Acapulco, where 14 kilometers to the southeast was the epicenter. 

"So far there are reported power outages, phone service failures and pictures of nervous breakdowns,"

said Civil Protection of Guerrero in a tweet on Tuesday night.

More than 300 miles (482 kilometers) away, in the State of Mexico, Governor Alfredo del Mazo activated the emergency protocols after the earthquake was also strongly felt there.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reported that there had been falls from fences and stones and the states of Guerrero and Morelos.

"Fortunately, so far we do not have any information on loss of human life," said the president, who received reports from General Cresencio Sandoval and the governors of Oaxaca, Puebla, Morelos, Guerrero and the head of government of Mexico City.

By 10 pm Central Time, more than 70 aftershocks had been registered, the strongest of them 5.2 degrees, according to the National Seismological Survey.

The earthquake occurs a few days after the anniversary of the earthquake of September 19, 2017, with its epicenter in Puebla, in which at least 370 people lost their lives and hundreds more were injured. Another September 19, but 1985, a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.1 with an epicenter in Michoacán devastated Mexico City and left an official death toll of almost 4,000.
