Olga Sánchez celebrates Court ruling on abortion 3:23
(CNN) -
The unanimous decision of the Supreme Court of Mexico on Tuesday on the decriminalization of abortion must be respected, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Wednesday at a press conference.
The president said he would support the court's ruling rather than express his opinion on the matter.
"What I think is that this is a decision of the Supreme Court's judicial power, which was practically unanimous, which must be respected," said AMLO. "We should not, in my case, take sides, because there are conflicting positions.
So, in this case, I should not pronounce myself except in favor of what the Supreme Court ministers have already decided. "
In these countries abortion is legal (and in these others it is not allowed under any circumstances)
"We have to be respectful of the law," he continued.
"When I took a protest as president, I swore to comply with the constitution and with the laws that emanate from it."
On Tuesday, the court ruled that a law in the state of Coahuila, which said that women who undergo an abortion can face up to three years in prison and a fine, went against the Constitution of Mexico.

The law, as established in article 196 of the Penal Code of Coahuila, establishes that both the woman seeking an abortion and the person who “causes an abortion to be performed with her consent” can be prosecuted.
