After being deprived of several fishing areas by Brexit, professionals on the Normandy west coast are now facing a new test: a toxin called DSP, present in scallops.

This toxin, if ingested, can cause diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

This is why analyzes are now carried out permanently off the Channel. This results in the closing of certain fishing grounds every week. “It's very fluid and therefore all the more restrictive for fishermen. Depending on the evolution of the toxin, we learn from one week to another that such or such area must be closed. Some shipping lines, particularly in Granville, threw in the towel and decided to leave their boat at the dock or go back to fish. In both cases, this is obviously a significant loss of earnings, ”explains Dimitri Rogoff, president of the Normandy Regional Fisheries Committee.

An analysis extended by Didier Leguélinel, president of the Granvilmer maritime cooperative: “Following the Brexit agreements, several boats could no longer go fishing in Channel waters. Some have lost nearly a third of their turnover! Needless to say, this toxin makes the situation even worse. Not to mention that the warming waters undoubtedly allow it to develop earlier and earlier in the season. And this problem is obviously likely to be repeated in the coming years… ”
