District - According to figures from the German Alzheimer's Society (as of June 2020), around 1.6 million people in Germany live with dementia according to the latest epidemiological estimates.

On average, around 900 new cases occur every day - the number of people with dementia is increasing continuously, and there are correspondingly more relatives of those affected.

This makes it all the more clear how important the topic of dementia is for all of us - including in society. For this reason, various institutions in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, coordinated by the Catholic district education center, have made it their mission to reach and inform as many people as possible.

In the course of the Bavarian Dementia Week 2021, various events were initiated and planned in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

As part of the first Bavarian Dementia Week 2019, over 600 campaigns took place across Bavaria, offering interested parties a variety of events on the subject of dementia.

The Bavarian State Ministry for Health and Care would like to build on this with a rich calendar of events in 2021.

Everyone is invited to take advantage of the event program during the campaign period from September 17 to 26, 2021 if they are interested.

The art of being in contact with each other

The week begins with a lecture by Lisa Wohlfrom, district manager of the district office of the generations of the community of Uffing am Staffelsee.

In her lecture, she explains why the usual “communicating” is often no longer possible due to dementia and which basic rules make it easier for us to get in touch with sick people.

The information evening "Dealing with dementia - and the art of being in contact" will take place on September 21st at 7 pm in the hall of the Gasthof Post in Uffing.

Two more events will follow on the next day: On September 22nd, the Café Malta, the Maltese meeting place for people with dementia in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, invites you to an open day from 10 a.m.

In addition to having breakfast together at Burgstrasse 15 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, there are activities, encounters and of course time for information.

At the same time, a “dementia parcours” is offered, which gives those not affected an insight into the world of dementia.

Also on September 22nd, the Kreisbildungswerk will be showing a film about the everyday life of people with dementia.

Stefan Sick's documentation shows that it is more about empathy than understanding this disease and its sufferers.

After the film, there is room for questions and discussion.

The demonstration begins at 7 p.m. in the cath.

Parish home St. Martin in Burgstr.

17 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

If you do not have the opportunity to attend an event on site, you will have the opportunity to find out more online about dementia in the family on September 23 from 7:00 p.m.

Author and dementia coach Petra Wieschalla presents in her lecture “Is that already dementia?

When Parents Become Forgetful ", she prepared her book" Survival Tips for Parent Carers "and worked out strategies with the audience on how to best deal with this situation of parents getting old.

The lecture will take place online via Zoom.

There will be information material and contact for support offers at all venues.
