Study: Renewable Energy Will Overtake Coal 1:03

(CNN) -

A new report from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) shows that solar power could play a huge role in the transition of America's power sector to clean energy.

The new DOE study on the future of solar energy, released Wednesday, shows that by 2035 solar energy has the potential to power 40% of the nation's electricity and create up to 1.5 million jobs, without increase electricity costs for consumers.

"The study shows that solar power, our cheapest and fastest growing source of clean energy, could produce enough electricity to power every US home by 2035 and employ 1.5 million people. in the process, "said Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm.

Today, it represents about 3% of the US electricity supply.

The study shows that the United States would need to quadruple its annual solar capacity by 2035, providing 1,000 GW of power to ensure that most of the electrical grid is powered by renewable energy.

The likelihood of that transition happening will largely depend on the renewable energy measures that Congressional Democrats can pass in their next budget reconciliation bill.
