A young man who said he was the victim of a homophobic attack in Madrid over the weekend retracted his statement to the authorities, a source from the Spanish Interior Ministry informed CNN on Wednesday.

According to the authorities, the first version indicated that a group of hooded men had recorded a homophobic insult with a knife on the young man in the buttocks.

"This afternoon, and thanks to the work of the National Police, the young man has declared that the injuries initially reported were consensual," the same source explained to CNN.

"This statement is made without prejudice to the development of the investigations and the judicial procedure," the source added.

As a police source familiar with the case added to CNN, the version offered by the whistleblower never quite convinced the investigators.

As they advanced, the agents realized that the security cameras deployed in the area did not show anything that could square with the first version.

Several organizations that represent the LGBTQ collective have called protests in Madrid for this Wednesday and Saturday afternoon due to the cases of attacks against sexual diversity made public throughout 2021.

At least one of the groups that have organized the demonstrations told CNN on Wednesday that the young man's new statement will not affect the call for the demonstrations.
