For their second debate, the five contenders defended their leadership on the left without really distinguishing themselves from each other.

Host of the debate, Ruth Elkrief asked them several times, insisting: "

Your potential voters must be able to distinguish you ...

" During the second debate of the five candidates for the open primary of the ecologists, Wednesday evening on LCI with

Le Figaro

and Loopsider, it will have taken more than an hour for them to begin to accept to recover. On the degrowth for example, a driving concept of the environmental deputy Delphine Batho but a word of which the ecological mayor of Grenoble Éric Piolle is "

not a fan

". During the two hours of debate, however, the ecologists especially expressed their desire to convince on the basis of a shared program for the upcoming presidential campaign. "

We will form a formidable French ecology team

”, promised, full of enthusiasm, MEP Yannick Jadot.

Unity of tone but palpable tensions

Their goal, they will obviously say, is for one of them to win on April 24, 2022 on the evening of the first round of the presidential election. But it is also and above all that ecology comes at the head of the left. There is therefore no question of opposing each other too strongly in public, even if they do not think less. If the words remained reserved, the tension was for example palpable between the feminist economist Sandrine Rousseau and her neighbor on the set, Eric Piolle. The latter, supported by solid figures of EELV including the former national secretary David Cormand or the former presidential candidate Eva Joly, has worked and traveled a lot during the last year, taking advantage of the regional and departmental campaign to meet the potential electorate of this open primary. But in recent weeks, Sandrine Rousseau, through her successive statements and a certain ease in the debates, has been able to gain the upper hand, at least in the media, over him. Piolle's annoyance was perceptible in the face of her neighbor's statements, sometimes cookie-cutter.

The outcome of the primary remains very uncertain

On the sensitive sovereign subject of security and immigration, which promises to be at the forefront of this presidential scene, Yannick Jadot dominated in tone and substance, insisting on the quality of the reception to be reserved for refugees , Afghans in particular.

The MEP is also far ahead in the polls, often the only candidate surveyed, placed in front of the PS candidate Anne Hidalgo.

An advance that says nothing about the outcome of the primary in which more than 65,000 people are registered for the moment. They can do it until September 12 at midnight, for 2 € and the sharing of a charter of values. A very low quota compared to the 3 million people who voted for the EELV list at the 2019 Europeans, led by Yannick Jadot. This limited number of registrants makes all maneuvers possible, including those potential by other left parties such as the Insoumis, which underline their proximity to Sandrine Rousseau, or the Socialists who would prefer to see Éric Piolle victorious, rather than Yannick Jadot.
