On Wednesday, excavators demolished the last non-listed building on the former site of the MD paper mill on Ostenstrasse in Dachau.

Dachau

- rubble covers the ground.

There is dust in the air.

A few minutes ago, the rear wall of the garage of the former fire station, the last building on the MD site in Dachau, stood here.

Now the wall is level with the ground.

An emotional moment for Adrian Till and Johannes Wirthmüller.

About a month ago, the two artists from Outer Circle did an artistic job on the wall (we reported).

“It was a great pleasure for us that we could leave our fingerprint,” says Till.

The two artists dedicated their painting to the former employees of the paper mill Friedrich Thoma and Sepp Baur. The latter was the most important correspondent on the site for the artists. "He dared to take the step to open up opportunities for us here," explains Wirthmüller. “Without him, not much would have happened on our side on the site.” Outer Circle is connected to the site in a special way. For the artists, the place was "a playground for many years", according to Till. Because during the demolition work they had decisively shaped the MD site, especially the Freisinger Straße, with their graffiti culture. "Our painting is about the history of the paper mill, the processing of paper and the demolition," explains Till - shortly before two excavators finally destroy the work of art.

The spectacle attracted interested spectators

Around 30 interested spectators had gathered on Ostenstraße to watch the demolition of the last wall.

Children had also come and watched the spectacle with excitement.

After the demolition work, the visitors still had the opportunity to choose a piece of the wall from the rubble and take it home as a souvenir.

So did Sepp Baur's grandson, who proudly carried a piece of the colored wall in front of him.

So it goes on with the site

“It's a historic moment,” says Thomas Schächtl, Isaria's press spokesman. For the project development company, the demolition of the last wall marks the completion of the upper demolition work, which took one and a half years to complete. "Now the reconstruction can begin", announces David Christmann, managing director of Isaria. The project development company is converting the former paper mill site into a modern city district over the next few years. In the future Mühlbachviertel there will be residential buildings, shops and restaurants as well as green spaces and bodies of water with a promenade.

The difficult work, according to Christmann, is still to come: the underground Mühlbach Canal has to be laid in four sections in a new stream bed in order to rehabilitate the ground.

It will be moved back later.

"The river should run above ground through the new quarter," explains Christmann.

The Isaria boss hopes to be finished with the underground work next year.

"Whether we start building the new city quarter in 2023 is up to the Dachau city council," he says.

The development plan still has to be worked out.
