(CNN) -
Tropical Storm Mindy formed in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Mindy is currently located about 90 miles west-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida.
The maximum sustained winds are 64 km / h and the system is heading northeast at almost 34 km / h.
A tropical storm watch has been issued in northwest Florida from Mexico Beach to the Steinhatchee River, according to the NHC.
Because the system is so close to land, the time for it to intensify is limited and Mindy is forecast to move inland tonight over northeast Florida as a minimal tropical storm.
Heavy rains will be the main threat.
