Foreign Minister Yair Lapid opened his diplomatic visit to Russia today (Thursday) by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, and paying tribute to the Red Army soldiers who fell in World War II.

The Foreign Ministry said that Israel valued the role of the USSR in defeating Nazi Germany and the role of the Red Army in liberating the extermination camps.

The monument, inaugurated in 1967 and placed near the Kremlin wall, has the inscription: "Your name is unknown, but your deeds will be remembered forever," and the fire is always lit.

Lapid took off for Russia yesterday with the departure of the holiday for his first diplomatic visit, where he is expected to hold a working meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
