The fatal accident on Lake Garda in June has not yet been resolved - but now there is new evidence.

A DNA examination revealed traces of one of the alleged perpetrators.

Munich / Salò - New evidence in the case of the fatal accident on Lake Garda: Almost three months ago, an Italian couple died in a crash that was probably caused by two Munich residents *.

Now, for the first time, traces of DNA have been found that seriously pollute the Germans.

Originally none of these traces were found after the accident on June 18, 2021, in which Umberto Garzarella († 37) and Greta Nedrotti († 25) died. Now Nedrotti's family started a second investigation. Luciano Garofano, advisor to the bereaved, took 15 swabs from the chrome-plated lever on the rudder of the “Orso”, and according to a report by the “Giornale die Brecia”, four of them can be assigned to one of the Germans. Seven smears in total were decipherable.

The Munich resident presented himself to the authorities on the Brenner at the beginning of July and is currently under house arrest in Modena.

Despite the new evidence, there are doubts that the Munich man was really at the helm at the time of the accident.

The surveillance cameras that captured the boat several times always show the owner of the Riva Aquarama "Orso" at the helm.

He had refused to do an alcohol or saliva test on the Sunday after the accident.

It therefore remains unclear whether his DNA will also appear at the wheel.

Accident on Lake Garda: claim for pain and suffering is rejected

The defenders of the two Germans have, however, rejected the compensation demanded by the bereaved - nine million euros - as "particularly excessive".

The Germans are being investigated for negligent homicide.

On the night of Sunday, June 20, according to the reconstruction of the police, the German motorboat crashed into the wooden boat of the Italians at around 11.30 p.m. For them it was one of the first trips together, they had only recently been a couple since “La Repubblica”. Garzarella died immediately of his serious injuries, Nedrotti's body was later found at the port of Porteste 100 meters away. If the perpetrators had reported to the authorities immediately, she might still have been saved.

The air is getting thinner for the two alleged perpetrators. But according to Italian law, they could get away with no jail sentence: If the bereaved and the perpetrators reach an out-of-court agreement, the latter could avoid a threatened prison sentence of five years. The Germans are accused of being heavily drunk. They had initially told the authorities that they had not noticed the accident.
