The number of intensive care patients with severe corona disease has recently increased again. People of one age group, on the other hand, are less likely to be affected.

The number of intensive care patients with severe corona disease has recently increased again.

People of one age group, on the other hand, are less likely to be affected.

Berlin - In the first months of the corona pandemic, mainly older people over 70 years of age and those with previous illnesses were considered to be at risk of becoming infected.

A lot has changed since then.

Various corona vaccines came on the market, including in Germany.

In this country, these were given especially to people over 60 years of age.

In the meantime, every German citizen, regardless of age, can get a Corona vaccination appointment promptly.

Most recently, Health Minister Jens Spahn complained that the vaccination curve was rising less than hoped.

Many people are still suffering from the corona virus, and the number of new infections has recently increased again.

It is also getting full again in the intensive care units.

But which age group is particularly often affected by a severe corona disease?

Corona: Age group of 50 to 59 year olds is particularly common among intensive care patients

Initial answers are provided by figures collected by the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI).

Their intensive register is updated daily, now DIVI has published its values (as of September 9, 2021).

Accordingly, the 50 to 59-year-olds, at 25.4 percent, make up the majority of patients who end up in the intensive care unit because of a coronavirus disease.

The 60 to 69 year olds follow immediately behind with 22.3 percent.

After all, the value clearly fell in this age group, which was previously most frequently affected by severe courses of corona disease.

Among 60 to 69 year olds, it had reached 37 percent of all age groups in mid-July 2021.

Together, people between 50 and 69 years old make up almost half of the people suffering from Covid-19 in intensive care units.

47.7 percent of corona intensive care patients fall into this age group.

Corona intensive care patients: Positive development in the generation over 70 years of age

The numbers for the generation over 70 years are declining, probably also due to the high vaccination rate among seniors.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, 83.2 percent of people over the age of 60 are fully vaccinated (as of September 9, 2021).

That apparently has its effect.

The proportion of Covid 19 intensive care patients among 70 to 79 year olds has fallen from 27 to 16.8 percent since April 2021.

Among the over 80-year-olds (seven percent), the number has remained consistently below ten since April.

The 30 to 39 year olds recorded an increase, albeit at a low level.

This age group makes up 8.3 percent (114 patients) of corona intensive care patients with severe disease.

In April 2021, the number was only three percent.

Corona intensive care patients: Slight increase in 18 to 29 year olds, hardly any children and adolescents affected

A similar development in the percentage of corona intensive care patients can be seen among young adults.

The 18 to 29-year-olds were also hardly represented among the seriously ill in April 2021 with just one percent.

The value has now risen to almost four percent (52 patients).

The proportion of children and adolescents from 0 to 17 years of age among corona intensive care patients is extremely low. It is just 0.8 percent, which corresponds to 11 patients.
