Rents in the Munich district have risen massively: by 25 percent in six years.

The IG Bau trade union is therefore calling for a housing package.

District

- "For years there has only been one direction for rents in the Munich district - namely always up," says Michael Müller.

The district chairman of IG Bau Oberbayern relies on a rental price analysis by the Pestel Institute.

Even the cold rent for apartments of simple standard has increased enormously in the Munich district from 10.40 euros per square meter (in January 2015) to 13.10 euros (in April 2021) - an increase of 25.5 percent.

For comparison: consumer prices have increased significantly less in the same period - namely by 9.8 percent, according to the Pestel Institute.

"The new federal government has to go to great lengths to provide more apartments," said Michael Müller.

"You can choose apartments"

Above all, there was a lack of affordable apartments and social housing - especially in the Munich district. "The situation in the Munich district is part of the nationwide misery on the housing market," says IG BAU federal chairman Robert Feiger. The turning of the rent spiral must come to an end. The rents have to go down again. For this, however, the new building must go up significantly - especially in the case of affordable apartments and social housing. Feiger is therefore calling on the new federal government to launch “a thick housing package”

The IG-Bau boss appeals to "take a critical look at the parties' election programs and listen carefully to what comes from those who want to join the Bundestag and the Chancellery".

There are parties who have already set clear targets for the construction of new apartments.

Others, on the other hand, remained vague and avoided specific figures.

“You can choose apartments,” says Feiger.
