Linderhof -

Ludwig II wanted to create a second Versailles in the Graswang valley.

Inspired by the Bourbon kings, he planned a large palace, but had to discard this project because of the poor subsoil.

Instead he had a building built in the style of a French pleasure palace instead of the royal house.

A fairytale object that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

They haven't had the chance to spend the night in the immediate vicinity of the palace and the park with its magnificent buildings for over a year.

The hotel, restaurant and café are closed.

What will happen to the house, which was already in operation in Ludwig's time, has not yet been determined.

As part of the relocation of the authorities announced in 2015, the idea of establishing an in-house depot for the Bavarian castles came up. According to the Ministry of Finance, this requires at least 2,000 square meters of space. In order to accommodate the depot, all public and private existing properties were first examined. Including the castle hotel. However, state parliament member Florian Streibl (Free Voters) considers this to be completely unsuitable for this purpose. He had visited the vacant hotel with State Chancellor Florian Herrmann (CSU) in 2020. Both quickly agreed that it needed to be revived and were convinced of its potential. Even then, Streibl was certain: “One can assume that such an archive will not exist, at least not in Linderhof.“Instead, the Oberammergau resident is campaigning for the accommodation and catering business to be resumed.

Hotel operations of great importance for the Ettal community

Vanessa Voit is also responsible for that. “It is in our sense, actually in the sense of the entire Ammergau Alps, that the hotel is available again,” emphasizes the Ettal mayor (non-partisan). “After all, tourism is our main source of income.” With Linderhof Palace, a “Bavaria-wide important attraction” is in her area of responsibility, “so it is of structural importance that the hotel reopens.” Talks on this subject are ongoing, Voit confirms. And that can also be elicited from Streibl. Details, in particular about the costs of the necessary renovation, have not yet been determined. Ultimately, "the budget committee has to decide," says Streibl. There is not much to be learned from the Bavarian Palace Administration either: “At the moment it is being investigatedUnder what conditions and costs a structural renovation would enable the economically profitable operation of a restaurant ”, explains spokeswoman Franziska Wimberger.

The castle hotel looks back on a long tradition. Even in Ludwig's time, guests were accommodated there. “That was also necessary because of the construction work, in some cases 200 people were employed,” says Voit, who has dealt intensively with the history of the castle. “That was organized by the manager's wife at the time.” As castellan, responsible for the castle operations and conservation issues, she knows her way around the area very well. In her book “Vom Lynder-Hof zum Schloss” she dealt intensively with its history. The old Schwaige in the Graswang valley was first mentioned in 1479 in the historical documents of the Ettal monastery. An abbot bequeathed the farm to a certain Hans Linder. From then on, the building was named "Lynder". King Max II later discovered the property for himself and used itwhen he went hunting and gave him the name "King's House". It was through him that his son, Ludwig II, came to this special piece of earth and decided to build one of his magnificent castles there.

“In an incredibly beautiful place,” says Voit. Hundreds of thousands of visitors experience this every year who explore the rococo building and the spacious park. Their expectation of being able to eat or even spend the night there is currently not being fulfilled. Closed signs are still hanging on the doors of the Schlosshotel Linderhof. The Mayor of Ettal hopes that this will change soon, as does the member of the Oberammergau state parliament.
