The new school year also begins in Bavaria - it's all about Corona again.

Masks and tests will probably be preserved, Minister of Culture Piazolo gives details.

Munich - The new school year will soon begin in Bavaria too.

Corona * will probably remain the dominant topic again, masks * and tests * will remain the order of the day.

On Thursday (September 9th), Minister of Culture Michael Piazolo (Free Voters) will comment on the start of school.

You can follow the press conference at 10 a.m. here in the live stream (video above).

What is known so far at the start of school?

Corona rules in Bavaria: Mask requirement in schools after the holidays

Bavaria's students will hardly notice the relaxed corona rules on Tuesday, the first day of school after the holidays.

The more than 6000 schools in the Free State start the new school year with comprehensive hygiene requirements.

First of all, the mask requirement generally applies again in all interior rooms of the schools.

Even at work in the classroom, children and adolescents are not allowed to set them down unless they are at least one and a half meters away from the person sitting next to them - even if they are vaccinated.

In primary schools, a simple mouth and nose cover is sufficient; from the fifth grade onwards, a medical mask is required.

The measure is intended in particular to prevent infections from returning travelers, said Piazolo at the end of the last school year.

He also urged parents to definitely have the children tested again in the days before school starts.

The mask requirement should initially apply until October 1st.

Corona rules at Bavaria's schools: tests are retained for the students

The tests also remain with the students.

All children and young people should test themselves three times a week.

However, there will be new tests for primary school students and children in support centers, at the latest after a transition phase.

The so-called PCR pool tests should then be used for them as soon as the logistical prerequisites for this are in place.

PCR tests are considered to be more reliable than the usual rapid tests.

In the future, the children should do the so-called lollipop tests twice a week - instead of three quick tests. Each child then sucks on two swabs. First of all, the samples are then collected from all of them in the laboratory - in other words, examined as a pool. If there is evidence of an infection in the class, the second samples from the children are analyzed individually in order to find those affected and to inform the schools and parents before school starts the next day.

It is still unclear whether this will work across the board in the coming week. Piazolo has promised that the pool tests will begin "soon after the lesson has started". At least in September this should be possible everywhere.

Corona rules at Bavaria's schools: "We all want as little quarantine as possible"

The following applies to quarantine: This should be avoided according to the advice of the Conference of Health Ministers (GMK). "We all want as little quarantine as possible," said Bavaria's Minister of Health and GMK Chairman Klaus Holetschek (CSU *) on Monday after the ministers' meeting. Face-to-face teaching should be able to take place as much as possible.

In principle, in a corona case, quarantine should no longer be ordered for the entire class. Symptom-free children who initially had to be in quarantine as close contacts should be able to end this with a negative test at the earliest after five days.

The federal states previously had different regulations and now want to act as uniformly as possible.

It remains to be seen how the Bavarian health authorities will actually implement the regulations and who will be the contact person, especially in suspected cases.

New school year in Bavaria: teacher associations criticize corona measures

But are these measures enough in the fight against Corona?

At least several teachers' associations do not see the state government's concept as sufficient.

The Working Group of Bavarian Teachers' Associations, in which four individual associations are represented, criticized that there was no “clear health concept for our schools” even after three corona waves.

The Education and Science Union (GEW) also criticizes the ministries' plans.

The GEW, for example, like the working group, complains that there are not enough air purifiers available in the classrooms so far.

Although this has been discussed for more than a year, vehemently demanded and also promised by the state government before the summer holidays, “there were no technical ventilation or air filter systems in the broadest sense,” said the GEW.
