Dietmannsried - 30 cycling chimney sweepers started their lucky tour on Tuesday.

For some small Allgäu residents, they were particularly lucky.

The "Swabian kiss blowers" play a hearty march.

The crowd looks excitedly towards the center of the village.

Around 40 chimney sweepers in Kluft came to greet their colleagues.

They should be seen soon.

30 cycling chimney sweeps have just left the hotel in the direction of the Dietmannsried festival hall.

The ten-minute tour is not a real stage, but it is just the right thing to start the journey.

The 30 sporty chimney sweepers want to pedal to Mainz in seven days.

Their mission: collect funds and distribute them to associations that support children with cancer and their families.

Moving story

"The daughter of a colleague was diagnosed with cancer 16 years ago," says Andreas Walter from Ratzeburg in Schleswig-Holstein.

He and his fellow cyclists have just been received at the festival hall.

The girl was nine years old when the cancer came.

"You have to do something, we chimney sweeps said at the time."

Since then, the chimney sweepers have cycled once a year and collect donations for seriously ill and cancerous children.

Each of the drivers has already put 500 euros into the pot and pays for board and lodging themselves.

“It's nice that the chimney sweep trade sticks together,” said the happy President of the Federal Association of the Chimney Sweep Trade Oswald Wilhelm.

Wilhelm comes from Dietmannsried and was certainly not entirely innocent of the fact that the lucky tour started there this time.

And the visit was worth it for the tour, because the community in the person of 2nd Mayor Otto Schmid had brought the big wallet, as well as the 2nd District Administrator Roman Haug, the State Guild Master Heinz Nether and the Swabian Chief Master Erwin Kastenmayer.

Chimney sweeps as a lucky charm and donation sponsor

The lucky tour was initiated by Ralf Heibrok, who will be cycling, organizing, moderating and motivating again this year.

He was proud of the fact that "at a time when televisions are getting bigger and the hedges are getting higher and higher, there is such a great social commitment".

He pointed out that you can also turn to the Glückstour during the year if you know a child who needs a donation.

“Then we appoint a chimney sweep sponsor on site who brings the money in person,” he said.

Working for children with cancer

Then it got exciting in the festival hall.

Which institutions in the Allgäu receive donations and, above all, how much?

It was very fair, because all the institutions considered received 3,000 euros each, which they were all very happy about:

• The Urmel Kinder Krebshilfe eV from Friedrichshafen supports families with children with cancer from all over Germany financially and supports, for example, a stair lift, a bathroom renovation or trips to clinics.

• The Förderverein Kinderhospiz im Allgäu eV is the initiator and founder of the St. Nikolaus children's hospice in Bad Grönenbach.

The whole family is supported there as soon as a child is diagnosed as being “incurable”.

Eight family places are used to recharge your batteries, where the families stay for around twelve days.

During the stay, the focus is not only on the sick children, but also on the siblings, who often receive less attention in everyday life and are therefore also called "shadow children".

"But children also die," said board member Alfons Regulator.

• The Bunte Kreis Allgäu operates an aftercare center for chronically and critically ill children and, for example, pays the aftercare costs if these are no longer covered by the health insurance company.

• The Hieroniemuß 'Doctor-Clowns eV provides humor in the Kempten, Memmingen, Ulm and Friedrichshafen clinics and conjures up a smile or two on the face of seriously ill children.

It has been scientifically proven that this contributes to healing.

• The support group for children with cancer in the Allgäu eV supports families of children with cancer in a variety of ways.

From financial donations for purchases, travel expenses or gifts to fulfilling wishes and exchanges among those affected.

"The support usually lasts six months," explains First Chairman Stephan Bartzack, "around 25 to 30 families are looked after in one year."

Bartzack makes it clear how important the donation of the Glückstour is in the current Corona phase.

“Nothing worked last fall and over Christmas,” he said.

The association was unable to acquire any donations for two to three months.

But it is important that the club members can meet the families and exchange ideas without words.

"With as much luck as we found it here, we can go on now," said the board with a smile.
