Weilheim - The harvest is not particularly sparkling this year.

The fruit trees in the Weilheim-Schongau district have probably suffered from the changeable and often stormy weather.

This is also noticeable in the fruit press of the fruit and horticultural association Weilheim.

According to Christian Hackl, cider manager and cashier of the fruit and horticultural association, there were only ten deliveries with a total of 650 kilograms of fruit during the last pressing. That is relatively very little, because normally you have an hourly output of one ton. So the rush was moderate. “Not much is to be expected this year. There's not much in the trees either, ”Hackl explains the situation. The heavy rain and hail damaged the trees.

Nevertheless, some people in the district come by with their fruit and have a fresh juice made from it. Only pears and apples are pressed in Weilheim. Depending on the variety, you get up to 60 percent juice. This means that around 60 liters of liquid can be obtained from 100 kilos of apples. In order to get a high quality juice, the fruit should be as ripe as possible. It should also be free of rot and free of any coarse dirt on delivery. This is the only way to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The performance of the press also plays a role in ensuring that the procedure is quick. This creates around 100 kilos in a quarter of an hour. It only takes longer when many people come by with smaller amounts of fruit, as the change takes more time, explains Hackl.

For those who want their juice to last, the fruit press offers bags and boxes for filling.

Here the juice is filled into plastic bags that are placed in a carton with a tap.

This cardboard can be reused for the next pressing.

For larger quantities of 30 to 50 liters, it can also be filled into barrels.

If the juice is then pressed and well packaged, the fruit residue, the so-called pomace, is left over.

This is not thrown away at the fruit press in Weilheim, but given to the hunters in the district.

They feed the pomace to the deer later in winter.

Pressing takes place on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Whether only five or a whole 100 kilograms - the apples and pears can simply be brought over.

However, for larger quantities, Hackl recommends that you register in advance in order to avoid long waiting times.

This can be done by phone on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on 0881/9279905.
