Online dating scam is registered in Hong Kong

Online dating scams are on the rise, ranking third on the list of scams last month. According to Hong Kong police data, a total of 822 online love scams were recorded in the first half of 2021, involving nearly 290 million Hong Kong dollars in fraudulent funds, and 85% of the victims were women.

According to the Hong Kong police Facebook page, fraud involving online dating increased significantly from HK$136 million in the first quarter to 152 million yuan in the second quarter.

The average loss per case is about 300,000, which is higher than the median annual income of Hong Kong people of HK$230,000.

30-39 years old accounted for 27%, 40-49 years old accounted for 25%, 20-29 years old accounted for 24%; and the most popular occupations of scammers are 15% of clerical workers, 8% of housewives, and 7% of unemployed persons.

The scammers pretended to be soldiers, pilots, and oil kings. They used the customs to detain 39.8% of the gifts, invest 34.6%, and 25.6% of the turnover as an excuse, and used FPS, bank accounts and even virtual currency to pass the amount.

On average, more than 50 scams are reported to the police every day

All kinds of scams are staged every day, and a little carelessness will bring money loss.

The police received a total of 1,718 fraud cases in August, an average of more than 50 cases per day.

Among them, online love scams ranked third.
