Abimael Guzmán, leader of the Shining Path terrorist group, died

Abimael Guzmán, head of the Peruvian terrorist group Sendero Luminoso responsible for more than 30,000 deaths in Peru between 1980 and 2000, has died.

Abimael Guzmán, head of the Peruvian terrorist group Sendero Luminoso, died this Saturday in a maximum security detention center, the National Penitentiary Institute reported in a statement.

Shining Path was responsible for more than 30,000 deaths in Peru between 1980 and 2000, according to the report by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

According to the INPE, Guzmán died on Saturday morning due to "complications in his health."

Guzmán, alias "Comrade Gonzalo", and who was at one time the most wanted man in Peru, was arrested in 1992 and was serving a life sentence for the crime of terrorism.

One of the most remembered terrorist attacks attributed to the Shining Path occurred in 1992, when two car bombs exploded in Lima, leaving 25 people dead.

In addition to the crime of terrorism, Guzmán was also convicted of illicit drug trafficking.

The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, referred to the death of Guzmán in a tweet published this Saturday.

"The terrorist leader Abimael Guzmán, responsible for the loss of countless lives of our compatriots, has passed away," Castillo wrote. "Our position condemning terrorism is firm and unwavering," he added.
