The US State Department's senior adviser on energy security, Amos Hochstein, confirmed that the Russian North Stream project is now a reality.

Reuters quoted Hochstein as saying that the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has become a reality that must be dealt with, and that Ukraine and Poland should abandon their fears of any threat this pipeline poses to the economies of their countries.

Hochstein added that there is a breather until 2024 to ensure that Ukraine maintains its status as a gas transit country, calling at the same time for Kiev to move towards alternative energy sources after this date.

In turn, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed during talks with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on the gas pipeline, her hope that Ukraine will remain the country through which Russian gas passes after 2024, when the agreement between the two sides expires.

The Russian company, "Gazprom", announced yesterday the completion of the construction of the entire "Northern Stream 2" gas pipeline.

It is noteworthy that the "Northern Stream 2" project includes the construction of two pipelines to transport gas from Russia with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually through the Baltic Sea, territorial waters or the exclusive economic zones of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

The United States opposes the project, imposing sanctions on the participants in its implementation in December last year and demanding that the joint stock companies stop immediately laying the pipeline.
