At about 10:30 pm yesterday (11th), members of the Central Police District Special Duty Squad and the Hong Kong Island Regional Tactical Unit carried out an anti-illegal gambling operation on Murray Road near Chater Garden. A total of 3 Filipino men and 16 were arrested. A Filipino woman and two Indian and Pakistani men, aged between 32 and 68, were suspected of "gambling in any place other than the casino or on the street."

In addition, the 21 arrested men and women were also suspected of violating the Prevention and Control of Diseases (Prohibition of Group Gathering) Regulations (Chapter 599G) (the Regulations), and the officers issued fixed penalty notices to them.

During the operation, officers seized a batch of exhibits, including three decks of playing cards and a small amount of gambling money.

All arrested men and women are now being detained for investigation.

The police reminded members of the public that street gambling is illegal.

According to the law, anyone who operates or manages or controls illegal gambling on the street is convicted with a maximum fine of 50,000 Hong Kong dollars and imprisonment for two years.

Anyone who engages in illegal gambling on the street is convicted of a maximum fine of 30,000 Hong Kong dollars and imprisonment for nine months.
