The event

With this award to director Audrey Diwan, this year the

Oscar

, the

Palme d'Or

in Cannes and now the Golden Lion in Venice went to films directed by women.

And what's more: Netflix won four of the prizes awarded by the Festival Jury, which this year was chaired by South Korean Bong Joon-hoo (

Parasites

).

Indeed, the film

L'Evenement

, by French Audrey Diwan, won the Golden Lion today at the 78th edition of the oldest Festival in the world, and the jury, in addition to Bong Joon-ho, was Chloé Zhao, the director from

, which won the Oscar for best picture in April.

In Cannes, the Palme d'Or had gone to

The event

was a firm candidate, as

published

on the same Monday that it was screened in competition, after the weekend in which Hollywood stars flooded the Lido, the island where the festival takes place.

The French became the sixth woman to win the Golden Lion. The first was the German Margarethe von Trotta, for

The German Sisters

(1981), followed by the French Agnès Varda with

Without a roof or law

(1985), the Indian Mira Nair with

The wedding

(2001), the American Sofia Coppola for

Somewhere - In a corner of the heart

(2010) and Chloé Zhao, of Chinese origin but already an American citizen, last year for

(2020).

The event

tells the story of a brilliant young university student (played by Anamaria Vartolomei) who in France at the beginning of the '60s decides not to continue with her pregnancy, despite the fact that at that time it was illegal.

The protagonist knows that she is risking ending up in jail, but continues with her plan.

The film is based on the novel in which the writer Annie Ernaux narrated her own clandestine abortion during her student days in France in the 1960s.

Diwan, 41, of Lebanese origin, worked as a journalist and screenwriter and is a member of Collectif 50/50, a French NGO that promotes equality between men and women in the film industry.
