He wanted to get a ball out of the water and was killed in the process: After the 14-year-old's death, his mother warns of the great danger on this section of the Isar.

The boy had no chance: When a 14-year-old schoolboy wanted to get a soccer ball out of the Isar around a month ago, the water roller near the Marienklausen Bridge was his undoing *.

A few days later he could only be recovered dead.

Now his mother wants to warn others: "Most parents and children are not aware of the danger of the beautiful waterfall step," she says.

"My son paid too high a price."

Munich: After the death of 14-year-olds, the mother and the water rescue warn of danger in the Isar

Friends set up a memorial near the scene of the accident: a skateboard with messages hangs from a fork in the branch, a painted heart is cut through a crack in the board.

The rest of the tree is also painted and written on, colorful ribbons, mourning candles and flowers are reminiscent of the boy.

A little angel bears the inscription "We will never forget you".

When the friends were designing the tree, another misfortune almost happened, reports the mother.

A dog jumped into the water - "and drowned almost like my son".

The animal could just climb out.

The mother demands further safety precautions.

"I ask that we pay attention to this place, fence it off somehow and cut off the access to the water at this point," she says.

"I don't want children or animals to accidentally die because they want to cool off and get their feet wet."

Munich: "Unfortunately there is no such thing as absolute security"

According to the Department for Climate and Environmental Protection, new signs were put up on the left and right sides in 2020. A spokeswoman explains that the danger is already being pointed out 600 meters before the danger zone "with large, clear warning signs". The accident affects everyone. “Our condolences go to the boy's family,” she says. “Unfortunately, there is no such thing as absolute safety.” In general, bathing is prohibited at weirs or similar danger spots, “as the built-in structures always create uncontrollable whirlpools and currents that cannot be controlled”.

Nevertheless, people go into the water there again and again - and often have no understanding when the water rescue service draws their attention to the danger.

"Some say they have always bathed there," reports Daniela Haupt, spokeswoman for the district water watch in Munich *.

But especially when the water level is high and the water is brown and cloudy, it becomes dangerous. "This is blown mud," explains Haupt.

“Even good swimmers can hardly get out when they get caught in a vortex.

They are repeatedly pushed under the water. "
