"The world is not always sunny and rainbows all over the sky; it is a bitter and terrible place." In this movie's dialogue, Chen Jialiang, Dean of the Chinese University School of Medicine, was still a little boy.

He was born in Ngau Tau Kok Estate, a young man with "two empty bags".

However, there is nothing to lose, it is precisely the most invincible advantage.

From studying medicine, practicing medicine, teaching, to innovation and science research, stepping up the ranks, every joint position is a world where you can't accept your fate.

Chen Jialiang is a movie enthusiast. When the Hollywood movie "Rocky" was released in 1976, he had just entered middle school.

What moved him, in addition to the above-mentioned flesh-and-blood dialogues, there is also the kind of fighting spirit that has to stand up in the irreversible cruel reality and strive for the upper reaches of the countercurrent-"Life is not about how heavy your punches can be, but you can bear it. A few more

punches and you

can still continue to hold on.” The head

of the countercurrent who resisted the punch after punch in the crowd, his growth portrayal, to us who can't die.

The location of the visit was Chen Jialiang's scientific research office in the Tai Po Science Park.

The walls are covered with a dazzling array of movie posters, and people who like and dislike movies are equally dizzy.

Guest host, Zhang Liang, Executive Director of Jockey Club Charity and Community Affairs, opened up the topic from the film; while talking about the film, the dean with shining eyes recommended 1976 "Rocky", an inspirational story of a Philadelphia kid challenging the world champion .

One of the lines is "You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." Multiplicity is that you can withstand a few multiple punches and continue to sustain it in the future.) For the next 45 years, this has always been his motto in life.

Chen Jialiang grew up in the Ngau Tau Kok Estate, his father was a taxi driver, and he attended a primary school near the estate.

According to today's statement, he lost at the starting line.

However, precisely because there is nothing to lose, everything becomes "invincible."

Although there are not many opportunities, he just refuses to admit his fate: "I told myself that I have two empty bags and I am not afraid of losing. No matter how the reality undermines me, I can stand up." Years later, when he has a successful career, he still believes that, "'Success' is the greatest enemy of success." People always have a day to fall, so never be afraid of losing.

Chen Jialiang went to university from St. Francis Xavier's College and chose to enroll in the Chinese University School of Medicine, which had not even graduated from the first class of students at that time.

When he was studying hard at Ma Liushui Shantou, his classmates called him "Chongji Lighthouse" because he often used the lamp to study at night.

The days of "driving the night car" were not in vain. He graduated with first-class honors.

Teaching is like witnessing life

Chen Jialiang, who is a gastroenterologist, was awarded the "International Leadership Award" by the American College of Gastroenterology in 2018, becoming the first Chinese to win the award.

He was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of CUHK in 2013 and was the first CUHK graduate to hold this position.

He was awarded the "Principal Model Teaching Award" in 2000 and 2007, and was selected as the "Teacher of the Year" by students for 5 consecutive years.

For his teaching career, he feels like witnessing his life.

"Medical students at the beginning of school, 17 or 18 years old, have ideals and motivation. Everyone wants to be a good doctor. But in reality, the difficulty of work is much greater than when they were studying. Ideals are buried in it, these are like the epitome of life."

Chen Jialiang insists on doing things personally and teaching students by example.

Chen Jialiang said that a patient’s life is "not take two," and there is a certain amount of pressure to be a doctor. Nowadays, the pressure on being a doctor is much greater than before.

"In the past, doctors said everything was like a golden rule; but nowadays, the general public is more knowledgeable, and society has higher requirements for doctors than before. When the requirements of patients are not met, conflicts are likely to result." , Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made great progress in recent years, and many studies even believe that AI may challenge the status of "real doctors".

Chen Jialiang has a beautiful picture with the new medical students of CUHK.

The doctor is not Confucius or a saint

However, the dean's message to the new generation of doctors, no matter how difficult the reality is, a heart of innocence will never be replaced.

"We are not treating patients, we are treating people. Although AI is good, doctors have nothing to replace; to give patients confidence, to communicate and care for each other, (this is) technology absolutely cannot do."

Because of this, Chen Jialiang insists on teaching outside of administrative work, and hopes to teach his younger generations by example.

He asked his students to follow him from morning to night for medical consultations, meetings, and scientific research, to see how he communicates with patients and family members, and he often tells students his growth stories.

"Doctors are not eternal teachers, Confucius, or saints. We must be a man of flesh and blood, so that students can truly feel."

From doctor to dean, Chen Jialiang understands that relying on one person to practice medicine is limited in the number of patients that can be diagnosed and treated. "If teaching can affect ten students, and ten students each affect ten people, these changes are geometric progression." However, it is necessary. To truly change the overall social health, scientific research is the way to go, so he has stepped out of the box in recent years to study the relationship between intestinal microecology and human health.

"In the past, people thought that intestinal bacteria were dirty and needed to be detoxified, but many health problems later proved to be closely related to the intestinal microbiome."

Chen Jialiang, who used to be known as the "Chongji Lighthouse" at CUHK, went upstream and his growth story is full of inspiration.

Gut ecology changes the world

Chen Jialiang described the fun of studying intestinal bacteria: "In simple terms, the human body has two sets of genes. One set is given to us by our parents and cannot be changed. That is, the so-called ugly life, which accounts for 1% of the human body; the intestinal microbiome , The total gene accounts for 99% of the human body.” He pointed out that as long as the intestinal bacterial ecology is changed, the risk of disease can be greatly reduced, and even the world can be changed.

He talked eloquently about the bacteria ecology that is invisible to the naked eye.

Regardless of practicing medicine, teaching or scientific research, Chen Jialiang’s passion for medicine described “As long as I survive my breath, my head will change. Practicing medicine is a life-long career that gives me great motivation, for the rest of my life.”

He has practiced medicine for more than 30 years and has seen life, old age, sickness and death. He deeply realizes that even with the rapid development of medicine, when life comes to an end, there is still no way to save life.

"Doctors are not trying to extend the life of patients meaninglessly, but to help patients live more meaningfully." To apply the "Rocky" series, "Life doesn't care how many boxing matches you win, how many times it counts to ten. After the clock strikes, you can still stand up. Process is the most important thing."

Chen Jialiang was awarded the "American College of Gastroenterology International Leadership Award" in 2018, and was the first Chinese to win the award.

20 years past and future

Chen Jialiang shared a true story, showing that it is not easy to get an insight into the first opportunity and go ahead of others.

After graduating from medicine, Chen Jialiang did not choose the most profitable surgery to continue his studies. Instead, he fell in love with the gastroenterology specialist. He followed the then young doctor Shen Zuyao (an authority on gastroenterology and served as the president of Chinese University from 2010 to 2017) and became Shen’s first student. .

The mentor, apprentice and team studied day and night and proposed in the 1990s that colorectal cancer will become the number one cancer in Hong Kong in the next 20 years, but in the eyes of others, this is like alarmism.

"At that time, we found that the number of colorectal cancers was rising like a helicopter. We applied for research grants from the authorities but were not approved. It was not that our plan failed, but the reviewers just threw it away without even looking at it."

Dismayed, in the late 1990s, he and Shen Zuyao sought the support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The Jockey Club agrees that the relevant plan has social needs, but the system was not touched at the time. The two sides hit it off immediately, leading to the launch of the colorectal cancer education plan, and laying the groundwork for CUHK to provide free colonoscopy and fecal occult blood tests to the public in the future.

Today, 20 years later, society knows that a single large intestine is enough to turn into a deadly cancer. Participating in screening can help prevent it before it happens.

Chen Jialiang invited Chen Nanlu, then director of the Jockey Club, who wrote the preface for his book "My Life Has Apricot-The Dean's Doctor Weekly", to share his writing experience at the 2018 Hong Kong Book Fair.

Jockey Club does not do the Me Too "ribbon cutting" plan

Chen Jialiang pointed out that the Jockey Club appropriation and donation plan that year, five years later, five years later, has been supporting.

"The Jockey Club is not a human being. I have a Me Too and I am only responsible for the ribbon-cutting plan. Instead, I really want to help the society."

Since the development of the plan, the SAR government officially announced earlier that the colorectal cancer screening program will be regularized, benefiting more than one million citizens.

At this point, Chen Jialiang shares an "open secret."

It turns out that a world-class gastroenterologist has been plagued by intestinal problems. As long as he eats dairy products, such as ice cream, coffee and milk, his intestines will immediately "react." Go to the bathroom"; I couldn't help but smile and said, "This is the cure but not self-treatment, but I really like ice cream..."

Chen Jialiang hung up master Shen Zuyao's calligraphy in his office in the Science Park, and he would "make the writing in ink" when he is free.

Support CUHK Hospital to make dreams come true

The Jockey Club has supported the Chinese University for many years. In addition to the colorectal cancer education program, the Jockey Club allocated 1.3 billion Hong Kong dollars in 2014 to support the construction of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Hospital. The largest donation from the university.

This non-profit and self-financing teaching hospital, which is owned by the Zhongda University, opened at the beginning of this year.

Chen Jialiang described, "Without the unprecedented huge donation of the Jockey Club, this dream would not become true."

The completion of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Hospital symbolizes that Hong Kong's medical services have entered a new milestone.

Jockey Club Chairman Chen Nanlu (fourth from left) earlier together with Jockey Club Chief Executive Ying Jiabai (first from right), Jockey Club Vice Chairman Li Zihou (fourth from right) and Jockey Club directors (from left) Huang Jiachun, Yang Shaoxin, Li Jiaxiang, Liang Gao Meiyihe Chen Yanli visited the hospital facilities.

Zhongda Hospital is positioned for the polarization of the current medical system, and hopes to take the third path.

Chen Jialiang explained: "The Prince of Wales Hospital is a hospital under the Hospital Authority. It provides high-quality medical services, but the waiting time is too long. Private hospitals are not affordable for everyone. There are many middle-class people between the two systems. Citizens, Zhongda Hospital hopes to find a way out of this. If this model succeeds, the future medical system will be able to move forward in a three-headed carriage."

Since the cooperation between CUHK and the Jockey Club is very forward-looking, Zhang Liang, guest host and Executive Director of Jockey Club Charity and Community Affairs, took the opportunity to ask for advice. In the future, what direction should we take to anticipate the needs of society?

"Declaration of Interests" Chen Jialiang said that he certainly hopes that the Horse Club will continue to promote the development of intestinal microecology research. "I believe this is a more important field than the genetic map, and it will be enough to change the world in the future."

Then, he pointed out the problem of aging population, that is, before entering the nursing home, there is a period of service vacuum.

"As people get older, they should not be ignored when they need medical services or even before entering nursing homes." He added, knowing that the Jockey Club currently has resources to help solve this problem.

The aging population also brings loneliness.

Chen Jialiang believes that mechanical assistance may be a way out: "In the future, it may be very common for us to live to a hundred years old, or even a hundred or two. When people are so old, it may be difficult to visit friends. You need to use robots to help you get to your destination; or when your friends around you are all gone, how is it good to stay alone in the world? At that time, you may need (R&D) Star Wars golden robots (C-3PO) moments. Chat with me and pass the time."

Chen Jialiang and Zhang Liang, Executive Director of Charity and Community Affairs of the Jockey Club, are also striving for the top.

Postscript: him and his movies

Chen Jialiang has a lot of interests. He is well-known for teaching and writing books; for those that are not often public, he walks into his office and the answer is right in front of him.

Chen Jialiang’s innovation and technology "paradise" is decorated with a combination of Chinese and Western decorations.

Chinese-style wooden desks are equipped with brush calligraphy and Chinese-style screens; the British-style hall is full of foreign movie posters, installed in frames, all of which are classic movie works.

Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, West Side Story, The Graduate, The Godfather, Grease "(Grease), "90 Boys’ Love" (When Harry met Sally), "Ghost" (Ghost), "Scent of a Woman", "Dangerous Person" (Pulp Fiction), "Kill Bill"...Even if you didn't have the opportunity to go to the cinema to watch it in person, there are still many opportunities to revisit the classics today.

Asking him to pick the one he likes the most, he thought about it for a while and "reluctantly" chose "Grease".

The dances of the protagonist Zun Travata and Oliva Newton Village are full of the feelings of Chen Jialiang when he was a teenager in the fifteen and twenty o'clock. In fact, he also likes to watch Hong Kong movies, "I have watched "A Fairy Tale of Autumn" more than a dozen times, and I know all the dialogue."

The big country hand is a bit of a literary and youthful color. On Chen Jialiang's social networking site, a piece of the Dean’s Doctor’s Weekly Record records the bits and pieces of his medical career, sometimes warm and sometimes sad.

Although he humbly said, "My colleague asked me whether I am writing in Chinese or English?" As for writing, he worked hard and meticulously. "

In 2018, he published the book "My Life Has Apricot-The Dean's Doctor Weekly" and invited the then Jockey Club director and current Jockey Club chairman Chen Nanlu to write the preface.

Speaking of today, he felt that he met an expert: "There is a mountain as high as the other. I think he has a lot of knowledge, but there are many people who are higher than you and have more profound knowledge."

On the day of the visit, Chen Jialiang wore a straight suit with a pocket scarf and a delicate hairstyle.

You can dress up on the day after tomorrow, but you can’t learn from the frozen age.

Asked him the secret of beauty, he said, "Thank you Mommy, I am very like her. She is in her 80s and looks like her in her 60s." There is another important point: look forward and always hold on to hope; practice not to be defeated. Full of vigor.

This is the dean’s law of freezing age.

The dean loves movies, and many of the dialogues from "Rocky" have inspired him deeply.

In good times and adversities, you must learn to be self-improving, that is, follow the links to answer simple questions and understand how high your resilience is.
