FIFA's partition plan shifts gears | Israel Today

The economic interest pushes for a World Cup once every two years, offers to cancel the qualifiers and divide the teams according to levels • This may overtake the opposition of the big clubs and possibly arrange for the Israeli team a world championship, even if in the third tier

Football fans do not like odd years, as the summer lacks a big tournament (2021 was an exception due to the corona), but it seems quite surprising - the cry of the fans reached the ears of FIFA officials, who are already cooking a revolution: World Cup every two years.

It was the Saudis who suggested it, mostly as emissaries from 166 countries who support the idea and from the real initiators, who meanwhile remain in the shadows and look at the lines of potential financial balance sheets, through which there remains an overlapping interest with the simple fan.

If the World Cups are indeed held once every two years, the continental championships (Euro, Copa America, African Championships, etc.) will be held as often, and so we will have a celebration every summer.

Accordingly, the balance sheets will explode from revenues, as everyone benefits from the World Cup, from FIFA to sponsoring companies.

For that to happen, all that remains is to shorten the qualifying stages.

Arsene Wenger, who replaced his coaching career as head of FIFA's development department, has already come up with this idea: instead of a long qualifier lasting a year and a half, he offered to set aside a full month for the qualifiers (October or March), and finish this stage quickly. Signals that change is already on the horizon, even if its realization by 2030 is impossible, because the schedule of major tournaments has already been set.

Despite the magic of the change, resistance to the new format is expected, and it's not hard to guess where it will come from.

The top leagues were frightened by the possibility of a season break for the month, and even more so by the realization that the load of games on the stars will only increase.

The solution may come from an even more revolutionary idea - to eliminate the qualifying stage.

In any case, the number of participants in the big tournaments is steadily increasing.

FIFA and UEFA are preparing proposals to expand the World Cup to 48 teams and the Euro to 32.

In that case the top teams will qualify for competitions in any scenario, so why would they even play in the qualifiers and their players waste time (and injuries) on games against weak teams in uninteresting games?

Will they get a real chance for a World Cup that is adapted to their level ?, EP

The solution that will include the cancellation of the qualifiers will involve dividing the teams into ranks.

Each one will play every summer - at the World Cup or the continental championship - against competitors at its level, as is already the practice in several other disciplines.

Thus the placement to one degree or another will not be a final sentence.

Depending on the results of the World Cup, the winning teams will be promoted to the next level, and the losers will be relegated to a lower level.

And from our point of view, we may be privileged to see Israel play in the World Cup again, and even win it - even if in the second or third tier
