The Italian Grand Prix was full of drama this Sunday, when Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided and both were left out for the rest of the race.

The drivers, who top the Formula 1 drivers' championship standings, were trapped wheel-to-wheel on lap 26 and, as Hamilton sought to take space from Verstappen, the Netherlands driver appeared to bounce off the edge of a curve, flying through the air and landing on top of Hamilton's car.

Verstappen could be heard on his team radio saying, "That's what you get when you don't leave space."

Both pilots were able to walk out of the incident.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA), the world's governing body for motorsports, announced that the incident will be investigated after the race.

The two drivers came close to contacting each other early in the race, when they faced off in a battle for second place on the first lap.

"He pushed me," Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, said on the radio.

Daniel Ricciardo took victory in the Italian Grand Prix

Beyond the drama, Daniel Ricciardo put in a calm and controlled performance to win his first race of the season.

The Australian passed Verstappen before the first corner of the first lap to come back from second on the grid and led most of the race.

His teammate, Lando Norris, made it 1-2 for McLaren, finishing second ahead of Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.

And to celebrate, Ricciardo took off his shoe, filled it with champagne, and drank it.

Even his teammate Norris joined in the "shoey" celebrations.

"Leading literally from start to finish I don't think any of us expected," he said afterward.

"There was something in me on Friday. I knew something good was going to come.

"For McLaren to be on the podium is good, but a one-two? This is for the team."

A heated rivalry

The battle between Verstappen and Hamilton has been intense throughout the season.

Both stand out for their strong battles, and that is part of the reason why they are at the top of the rankings this season.

It has often been one or the other who has had to withdraw from a race after one of their disputes, but, at Monza, this time both drivers crashed.

Coming out of the pits, Hamilton joined the track with Verstappen.

The Red Bull driver had a wide line and, while trying to regain the race line, his car bounced on top of Hamilton's, leaving both of them stopped in the gravel off the track.

Television reruns appeared to show Verstappen's car landing in the halo interlock of Hamilton's vehicle.

The halo is a mandatory protective device on F1 cars.

The halo, a titanium structure that protects the pilots in their cockpits, was developed after the death of Jules Bianchi in 2015, nine months after he suffered head injuries at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Afterward, Hamilton said he believed Verstappen could have backed down "without a doubt."

"Exactly the same scenario that happened in Turn 4, where I went around the outside, I was in exactly the same position, but I gave in," Hamilton told Sky Sports.

"And that's the way racing is. Today he didn't want to give in. He knew when he went into Turn 2 what was going to happen. He knew he was going to go over the curb, but he still did it. We'll talk to the stewards and we'll see".

Red Bull driver Verstappen said he "just wanted to do the race."

"You need two people to work together to make the corner but unfortunately we touch. If one guy is not willing to work, it is not going to happen," Verstappen told Sky Sports.

"It's very unfortunate what happened today, but I think we are professional enough to get over it. I think we can talk about it for sure."
