The project:

Private house in Sharon

Tenants:

Couple + 4

Space:

270 sq.m. Built on a plot of 380 sq.m.

Architecture, planning and design:

Hillel Architecture and Design

The couple, who love travel and aesthetics, have purchased and renovated several houses and apartments in the past.

They bought this house because they recognized great potential in its original architectural structure and liked the fact that it was actually built of half levels and not floors.

The house was built in the 1980s as part of a series of similar houses that characterize the street.

Its great advantage is the sloping ceiling of the central space that allows for easy raising and utilization of volume to enhance the sense of space and beauty in the space.

The sloping ceiling is one of the salient advantages here, but there is more, wait and see.

The desire was to produce a comfortable house that would include a ground floor with a large and comfortable kitchen, a dining area and a spacious living room, a recreation and accommodation unit on the lower level and bedrooms at the top.

Since these are adult children the preference was to place the master suite on the upper level and produce four children’s rooms on the middle level, as suites containing private bathrooms.

The house in its original size was too small, so after the planning stage, an application was submitted for an additional floor for an attic, changes to the facades and roof, and the addition of a pool.

"Our office's reference in home design is to 'residential complex' planning, so the planning thinking along the way was how to maximize the sense of space in the home's exterior experience," explains architect Shira Muskel and interior designer Hadas Roth, owner of Hillel Architecture.

"We put a lot of emphasis on exterior planning out of thinking about the huge impact that garden design has on the feelings and experience of living indoors."

Like building a new home, just a little faster

The detailed design and planning procedures lasted about five months, the licensing process lasted about a year and the revolutionary renovation was completed within eight months.

Eventually the house was completely stripped of the old finishing materials and infrastructure.

The remaining skeleton underwent massive alterations and additional construction and flooring.

The process is almost like building a new house but since the skeleton mostly exists, it was much faster.

Green vegetation that envelops an access path paved with bluestone stones.

The entrance to the house is lateral and leads to a plaza paved with stone in a dark bluestone wrapped in vegetation that slopes down on its side.

The reception is reflected in the wealth of details and materials already at the entrance.

This is reflected in the small ornamental pond in the appearance of a rust pond with mesmerizing water flowers, an authentic Indonesian bench and planting containers with flowers and trees.

A classic black door with a light opening leading into the house.

The high ceiling is the most prominent element when entering.

The height is surprising and draws the eye upwards.

The central space contains a kitchen in the shape of the letter H, in the center of which is a work island that is used by the members of the household for daily meals.

The refrigerator and the drawers on its sides are the axis of symmetry of the kitchen and the carpentry units in this wall contain a lot of storage and make good use of the height of the space.

Two sinks and two stoves.

Work surfaces with sinks are located on both sides.

On one side is a stove with a retro-industrial look combined with a stove, this side is very active especially on weekends.

On the other side is a stove with two flames for daily use, next to them is a TV screen on the wall that is engraved in the surrounding black metal cladding.

The kitchen stands out with the high level of interior systems and the unique finish of the facades.

The shade chosen is a light metallic gray that gives it a refined industrial look.

The black LAMINAM surfaces complete the balance in front of the pair of refrigerators in matte black, while the dark cili-granite sinks are almost completely immersed in them and present a look of a uniform and impressive work surface.

A light and not awkward presence.

Next to the kitchen in the center of the central space is the round dining area.

The table opens easily and turns from an eight-person table into one that hosts sixteen diners.

"We like to place round tables in the center of a space or corner because their presence in the space is relatively light and not awkward. When the space is not very large it serves us well," Muskel and Roth explain.

The living room space is surrounded by large openings to the courtyard.

On the high wall that was created, an impressive iron library was designed that combines favorite books and art items.

In the left part of the unit a drinks bar with a pouring counter was designed.

And behind the big screen is hidden the air conditioning unit.

"In designing the lighting in the central space, we had to deal with solutions that match the height of the ceiling. In order to create a clean but well-lit space, we chose to place a lighting profile above each opening that spreads light up and down. And are a kind of lighting jewelry that enriches the space and outlines its special character. "

The twist of the windows and stairs

One of the first decisions in the project was the choice of windows.

The windows, made of wood on the inside and aluminum on the outside are known for their high quality of insulation, acoustic and thermal which was very important to the homeowners.

The black windows create a significant emphasis of each and every opening and frame in a delicate carpentry work the beautiful courtyard image that is seen from each opening.

Another very significant element in the central space is the staircase.

In the original house the stairs were hidden by a wall with a peephole.

One of the obvious decisions was to destroy it and open up as much as possible.

The original stairs were demolished and rebuilt of concrete in a serrated manner along with the added gram leading to the attic.

The unique location of the stairs allows good exposure of the bedroom floors to the central space.

One of the most pleasant experiences in the house is the descent in the morning from the rooms to the entrance floor when the pool and the beautiful garden unfold opposite from the first glance.

The materials chosen for the home combine styles.

This is especially noticeable in the central space where a modern industrial kitchen is located on the rough and cracked hardwood floor of a wood and wood company.

Combining materials like brass and black metal together with a leather sofa in a classic and warm look create an interesting contrast.

The stairs are covered with very dark gray blue stone slabs and their encounter with the authentic parquet works wonderfully.

Kopenhagen in the yard

"The yard feels to us completely like part of the entrance hall. It is the complementary mirror image of life inside. We argue that no matter how much we invest inside the house, when the yard is well made it will always steal the show," Roth and Muscle say.

According to them, the courtyard was designed inspired by the resorts in Thailand with the aim of getting some of the tranquility and atmosphere of detachment that takes place somewhere in the Far East.

"The design concept is reflected in the planning of the stand we created for the yard and especially in the elevated stage next to the pool with a canopy arbor with luxurious sun beds. And the tall bamboo bushes create for us exactly the atmosphere we dreamed of. "

The courtyard is a recreation and hospitality complex that includes a luxurious and heated turquoise pool, a seating area around a fire table, a large dining area table and a well-equipped kitchen.

At the end of the compound is a screen that operates with a large projector located below it and projecting upwards.

The lower half level serves as a living and recreation unit and also contains a bathroom and laundry room.

The half level above the living room contains the four children's rooms.

Build their own bathrooms and the boys share a bathroom with two entrances, out of the room of each of them.

Between the rooms is a pleasant foyer with a small work area.

The ceiling of the sloping beams gives the room its special character.

Attic Master Unit (Photo: Oded Smadar)

On the upper level, in the attic, is the master suite.

But since these are half-levels, the ascent from the entrance floor is only one and a half floors.

Towards the street it is two storeys, so although it is not really located very high it has a positive and significant sense of disconnection from what is happening in the house and on the street.

The unit is about 40 square meters and is spread along the floor and opens to a large balcony. Like the ground floor, here too, the balcony is an integral part of the interior space, defines and enhances it with a sense of space and atmosphere. The

space is divided into a sleeping area Bar and coffee machine, audio system and lots of textiles. The sloping beamed ceiling which is a continuation of the living room ceiling gives the room its special character. The slopes are well utilized for storage cabinets and also for hiding an air conditioning unit.

Further down the space is the closet, in two parallel lines separated by a mirror that creates the illusion of endless space.

The spacious bathroom eclectically combines an authentic wooden cabinet with shiny black tiles and black tiles with a worn look on the floor.

The room is actually divided into a sleeping area and a closet and bathroom area which allows for comfortable use of each of the parts without interruption.

Between the two parts is the large exit to the balcony with an electric blackout curtain that allows quick control of the darkness of the room.

An illusion of endless space.

The materials selected for the master suite combine black and white contrasts with the wooden floor connecting them.

The windows in the bedroom are white on the inside and black on the outside.

"It is one of the advantages of this window system that allows us the design flexibility. The inspiration for a room is taken from the oriental colonialist design that combines these contrasts in a classic and minimalist way. The pair of designers.
