Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met today (Monday) with Egyptian President al-Sisi in Sharm el-Sheikh.

This is Bennett's first visit to Egypt since his entry into the Prime Minister's Office.

Unusually, Bennett's visit to Egypt is public and the Egyptians are making an effort to externalize him.

Former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has met with President al-Sisi in Egypt several times, but all of these visits have been secret.

The last public visit of the Israeli Prime Minister to Egypt was in September 2010, when Netanyahu arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh to attend a summit with then-President Hosni Mubarak, Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen Abbas and then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The meeting between Bennett and the Egyptian president is expected to focus on the Palestinian issue - both in attempts to reach a settlement in the Gaza Strip and avoid renewed escalation, and in the Egyptian desire to strengthen the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.
