Australia has recently struggled to contain an outbreak of the highly contagious delta variant that has spread to the main population centers of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, causing lengthy lockdowns.

The country announced plans to test vaccination passports as it prepares to reopen its borders to international tourism.

In its broader travel guide, the CDC has recommended avoiding all international travel until fully vaccinated.

"Fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to contract and spread COVID-19. However, international travel poses additional risks, and even fully vaccinated travelers may be at higher risk of contracting and possibly spreading some variants of COVID-19." the agency said.
