Olivia Rodrigo became the
star artist
this Sunday at the
fortieth edition of the MTV Music Video Awards, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, in New York.
In her first participation in this event, the American singer won three statuettes and outnumbered other great figures of international music.
Rodrigo, who was catapulted to fame by social networks, won the categories "best new artist", "song of the year and" performance 'push' ('drivers license') ", on a special night because the awards were carried out with the
presence of the public, for the first time
since the declaration of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Barclays Center
was filled to capacity
with hundreds of fans who screamed with enthusiasm as they watched their favorite artists walk the red carpet and take to the stages, something that was missed after last year's virtual edition.
Rodrigo assured that this is
the "most magical" year of his life
and dedicated his awards to "all the girls who write songs on the floor of their rooms."
The 18-year-old let her emotion show when she received one of the awards from Jennifer Lopez.

Madonna was in charge of opening the show by paying tribute to MTV's 40 years and her own career, which have intersected on many occasions.
Dressed in a dominatrix-style bodysuit, at 63, she said of MTV:
"It changed my life, changed the world, and created a whole new art form
.
"
Pure show
The night continued with
spectacular performances
under the watchful eye of a huge astronaut - a symbol of the awards - who guarded the stage.
One of those presentations was that of Justin Bieber, who surprised by wearing very wide pants and jacket and hiding under a hood after six years of absence.
The Canadian singer, who had seven nominations, was distinguished as
best artist
and also triumphed in the pop category ("Peaches", along with Daniel Caesar and Giveon).
For his part, Lil Nas X, the first openly gay rapper to rise to fame, caused a sensation on the red carpet in a long lilac sequin-covered dress.
On stage, she
dazzled by shedding capes into glitter boxers
, performing "Industry Baby" alongside Jack Harlow and then her award-winning "Montero (Call me by your name)."

The American artist had to wait until the last minute of the night to declare himself the winner of the video clip of the year -a prize to which he adds those for the best direction and visual effects-, but he savored it from the first second, exclaiming:
"Thanks to the agenda! gay! "
.
For its part, one of the most acclaimed artists, Billie Eilish, took two statuettes: the one for the best Latin video for her collaboration "Lo Vas a Olvidar", with Rosalía, and the one for "video for good" for her song " Your Power ", about inappropriate sexual behaviors.
"We have to protect our young women at all costs," she
declared.
Other distinctions
The
Latin music
, although the prize in that category did not appear at the gala but was released later, was fitted with animated presentations Camila Cabello;
Shawn Mendes and Tainy;
and Ozuna, who dedicated his funny "La Funka", surrounded by stuffed animals, to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
Among other prominent awards was the groundbreaking "US Global Icon"
which was awarded to rockers
Foo Fighters
.
"We have been a band for 26 years and it is very good, but we want to thank all the people of MTV yesterday and today," said Dave Grohl, singer and guitarist of the band.
One of the most sensual moments was starred by the master of ceremonies,
Doja Cat
, winner of the best collaboration for "Kiss Me More" with SZA, who sang some of her hits suspended in the air, with her figure framed by the lights and smoke.
The most disappointing night was Megan Thee Stallion.
The rapper was one of the favorites, but she left without distinction, despite the controversy caused by her provocative song "WAP", with Cardi B.
