When school starts on Tuesday, many students will be out and about in the Freising district - including a good 1700 first graders.

An appeal from the police.

District

- Six weeks of summer vacation are over - school starts again on Tuesday. 1765 girls and boys in the district have their first day of school. And in the next few days they will also be able to cope with their way to school on their own for the first time. School beginners as the “weakest link” in road traffic are particularly at risk and can only poorly assess the dangers that arise. Here other road users are required to drive with a correspondingly increased level of attention.

Parents have several options to ensure that their children get to school safely: "The way to school should be repeated with the children and attention should be drawn to peculiarities and dangerous situations as well as behavior adapted to the situation," advises Freising's acting police director Michael Ertl.

You should use the safest and not necessarily the shortest route to school.

Crossing aids such as pedestrian lights, zebra crossings and lane dividers can help.

What Parents Should Know

According to Ertl, it also makes sense to explain the most important rules for pedestrians to the children, "although it should be remembered that a child's attention is limited".

Before entering the lane, children should make sure that no vehicle is approaching from either side.

Then the road should be crossed quickly and using the shortest possible route.

Very important: "Do not step on the road behind parked vehicles or other obstacles that restrict your view," explains Ertl.

Also very important, so that the children can be seen better in traffic: Wear eye-catching, colored clothing, especially in bad weather or in the dark.

One thing particularly important

One thing is particularly important to the police: “School beginners should never ride a bike to school. A six-year-old child is not yet able to cope with the demands of road traffic, ”says Ertl. Driving the school bus should also be practiced and discussed in advance. It should be explained to the youngsters that the bus stop is not a playground and that you should never cross the street in front of or behind the stopping bus, but always wait until the bus has left.

The police made several appeals to road users: 1. Adults should always be a role model in road traffic, as wrong behavior is quickly picked up by children.

2. Always drive with foresight and be ready to brake.

3. Be more vigilant.

Children are not yet able to correctly assess distances and speeds.

Increased controls at the beginning of school

The police inspections in Freising, Neufahrn and Moosburg will again carry out more surveillance measures at the start of school, in particular at critical points in the area around schools and on the school routes that are heavily frequented by schoolchildren.

Above all, speed measurements and controls for seatbelts, child safety in the vehicle, wearing protective helmets on motorcycles and behavior at bus stops are carried out here.

By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our new, regular Freising newsletter.
