Tropical Storm Nicholas is heading toward Texas and Louisiana, threatening to soak the region for much of the week and flood some communities.

Having slowed to a near stop in the Gulf of Mexico, the storm could intensify significantly.

There is a hurricane watch from Port Aransas to Freeport, Texas, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

  • Climate change is making hurricanes stronger, slower and wetter;

Ida was an example of this

The storm is about 75 kilometers southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande, with maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Monday morning. .

Torrential rains are forecast for the Texas coast, and there is a significant flood threat through Wednesday in areas from Corpus Christie, Texas, to the greater Houston area and parts of western Louisiana, including Lake Charles.

Much of southeastern Louisiana is still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Ida just over two weeks ago.

Nicholas, the 14th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.

A 14th named storm in the Atlantic basin, the total number of storms in an average season, usually doesn't form until November 18.

Threats of torrential downpours

The center of the storm would move across or near southern Texas Monday and Tuesday over the upper parts of the coast.

Heavy rains will be the main threat, and rainfall of up to 10 inches is expected for southwestern Louisiana.

On the middle and upper coast of Texas, the storm is expected to drop as much as 16 inches, the NHC said.

"This storm has the potential for widespread flash flooding. Houston can easily get into trouble with 4 to 5 inches of rain," said CNN meteorologist Tom Sater.

"More of that will create bigger problems."

Storm surge will also be a risk, with a forecast of 2 to 4 inches across parts of Texas and Louisiana.

The stretch of the Texas Gulf Coast from Port O'Connor to the San Luis Pass could see a storm surge of up to 150 centimeters and there is a storm surge warning.

CNN's Michael Guy contributed to this report.
