According to the UN, in the absence of support and dialogue from the international community, almost the entire Afghan population (97%) is at risk of falling below the poverty line next year, compared to 72% today .
Faced with this projection, Antonio Guterres, the head of the UN insists on the fact that the international community must discuss with the Taliban to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.
"If we want to advance human rights for the Afghan people, the best way is to move forward with humanitarian aid, to engage with the Taliban and to take advantage of this humanitarian aid to push for the implementation of these rights, ”he said on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting in Geneva.
A meeting in which the UN asked for more than $ 600 million in aid for humanitarian organizations in this country.
Reluctance of some states
Paris has already announced that it wants to release 100 million euros in this context and Washington will contribute 64 million euros.
The UN said donor states had pledged a total of $ 1.2 billion in aid, but did not specify how much was specifically intended for this emergency appeal.
Since mid-August, the country in the hands of the Taliban has remained isolated despite the support of Qatar. And even if a commercial plane landed in Kabul yesterday, the normalization of relations with Afghanistan is far from being achieved. According to Antonio Guterres, however, the international community must find mechanisms "to ensure that we do not let the Afghan economy collapse". The collapse of the country would have "devastating consequences" and "could trigger a mass exodus", he further warned.
However, a number of countries refuse to provide aid directly to the new regime in an attempt to bend it while awaiting commitments from the new regime on subjects of concern to the international community such as "terrorism", "drugs" ... , some States before providing their financial support want to obtain assurances so that these sums are intended for humanitarian aid.
