In previous sessions of the Human Rights Council, Nicaragua has emphatically rejected the reports, which it considers politicized, selective and based on data provided by organizations that participated in what the government called an attempted coup in 2018.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and the Office of the High Commissioner, in a joint statement, had rejected the criminal charges against the opponents, as they expressed to restrict their right to participate in public affairs and the right to freedom of association, by formalizing serious crimes against them, such as money laundering allegedly linked to the implementation of cooperation funds or conspiracy to undermine national integrity.
