Washing the sheets seems pretty straightforward.
Unfortunately, many people are washing their bedding the wrong way, and to compound the confusion, many of the old laundry rules we grew up with have changed along the way.
To clear things up and get some firm guidelines, we spoke with laundry and bedding experts about the proper way to wash sheets, duvets, and covers, including the question everyone wants answered: How often are we supposed to wash them? ?

How to wash the sheets
Katie Elks, director of design and product development at Brooklinen, says: "For all sheets, we recommend washing them on a cold cycle."
Brian Sansoni, senior vice president of communications for the American Cleaning Institute, echoes those guidelines: "Most clothing can now be washed in cold water. That should be the default."
Sansoni explains that cold water is "effective, but your sheets will last longer," because washing with cold water reduces wear and tear, as well as discoloration.
Elks says that people should own at least two sets of sheets to increase longevity.
It is also advisable to have more than one sheet for the days when you do not have time to wash them or in case someone soils the sheets and an immediate change of bedding is required.
Ideas to organize your desk that will improve the way you work or study at home
Both Elks and Sansoni recommend separating sheets into light and dark loads, although modern technology has made this rule less absolute than it used to be.
Because cold water is now the standard for laundering, the need to separate textiles by color is less important than separating by fabric type.
If you choose to wash dark and light sheets together and dye transfer is one of your concerns, use a color picker in the wash to capture any loose dye before they can stain lighter colored items.
However, Sansoni notes that if all of your sheet sets are dark in color, you may want to "consider a detergent for darker fabrics that is meant to reduce discoloration."
The basics:
Wash white sheets separate from dark or brightly colored sheets.
Pretreat stains or use a laundry booster in the wash for stain remediation throughout.
Wash the sheets in cold water.
Use the 'normal' cycle (also called 'regular').
How often to wash the sheets
This is the question everyone wants an answer to: how often should people wash their sheets?
"Every 1-2 weeks," Sansoni says, adding that "weekly is better, especially if you have a dust mite allergy or during the summer when you probably sweat more."
Items you need for rainy days and that you can find on Amazon
Elks agrees.
"We suggest washing your sheets every two weeks and alternating between two different sets to increase longevity. If you sweat a lot while you sleep, washing them more often will help your sheets feel cooler."
Some other factors to consider when determining how often to wash your sheets
Do you sleep at home every night?
Frequent travelers won't need to change sheets as often.
Do you have easy access to laundry facilities?
Otherwise, you may not wash as often, so you may want to have more sheet sets than the two that experts recommend.
Do you shower before going to bed at night?
Do you sleep naked?
People who sleep naked or suffer from night sweats will want to wash more often than people who shower before bed or sleep in pajamas.
Do you sleep alone or with a partner, child (ren) or pet (s)?
Two (or more) people in a bed means dirtier sheets that will need to be washed more often.
